Second software problem detected in Boeing 737 Max

Deliveries of Boeing's best-selling aircraft were frozen after a global grounding of the narrowbody model following the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines jet on March 10, killing all 157 people onboard.

"This should not happen to anyone again and that's why we're here", said Michael Stumo, Samya's father.

On Thursday, Boeing recognized the similarities between the two crashes, and acknowledged the role of its anti-stall system.

Boeing has previously said when the 737 MAX returns to the skies with new software changes, it will be among the safest airplanes to ever fly.

"We at Boeing are sorry for the lives lost in the recent 737 Max accidents", CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a video.

"The preliminary report contains flight data recorder information indicating the airplane had an erroneous angle of attack sensor input that activated the MCAS function during the flight, as it had during the Lion Air 610 flight", said Muleinburg.

Ethiopian Airlines' doomed 737 Max jet hit excessive speed and was forced downwards by a wrongly-triggered automation system as pilots wrestled to regain control, a separate preliminary report into the crash that has shaken the aviation world showed on Thursday.

Ethiopian minister of transport, Dagmawit Moges, while giving update report on the awful incident at a news conference on Thursday, April 4, said the crew performed all the procedures repeatedly provided by the manufacturer but was not able to control the aircraft.

Federal Aviation Administration and customers to develop and release a software update to the MCAS, along with an associated comprehensive pilot training and supplementary program for the 737 Max, according to Muilenburg.

Boeing is working to develop a software fix that will get the 371 grounded 737 Max jets back in the air.

Manufacturers avoid halting and then resuming production as this disrupts supply chains and can cause industrial snags.

Boeing president added with the release of the preliminary report of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 accident investigation, it was apparent that in both flights, the MCAS was activated in response to erroneous angle of attack information.

"Those should literally follow each other", said one US -based expert, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The report leaves unanswered questions, some experts said, such as why the plane's trajectory did not respond to pilot and automatic commands including two final nose up commands from the pilots about 30 seconds before the plane crashed. It's our responsibility to eliminate this risk. "We own it, and we know how to do it". That may not be surprising, given that Ethiopian Airlines had just five of the planes, including ET-AVJ. The trim system is also used to stabilise a plane.

It has also brought uncomfortable scrutiny over new software, pilot training and regulatory rigour.

But if the aircraft is going too fast, those electronic switches may not be effective, European regulators said in a 2016 memo.
