Justice Department defends process for handling Mueller Report

Reports by The New York Times and The Washington Post released Wednesday evening said that some of Mueller's investigators believed that the results of the special counsel's investigation were more damaging to Mr. Trump than Barr's letter revealed.

Barr said last week Mueller's report will be released to Congress and the public by "mid-April, if not sooner".

U.S. Attorney General William Barr's signature is seen at the end of his four-page letter to U.S. congressional leaders on the conclusions of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report on Russian meddling in the 2016 election after the letter was released by the House Judiciary Committee in Washington, U.S. March 24, 2019. Barr issue a four-page summary of Mueller's almost 400-page report, purporting to clear Trump, must have seemed like a good idea at the time. Mueller himself has not publicly (or privately, as far as we know) disputed Barr's summary, even though his office immediately jumped to deny a report from Buzzfeed months ago claiming the special counsel was told Trump directly told his former lawyer Michael Cohen to lie.

"This committee requires the full report and the underlying materials because it is our job, not the attorney general's, to determine whether or not President Trump has abused his office", Nadler said.

The Judiciary Committee authorised Mr Nadler on Wednesday to subpoena the department to obtain Mr Mueller's full report, moving closer to a legal clash with the Trump administration.

"Majorities of Americans believe the full Mueller report should be made public", declared Public Citizen in a statement, referencing polls showing "overwhelming" support for the report's disclosure.

"But if that doesn't work out in a very short order, we will issue the subpoenas". Nadler told reporters he would also seek a judge's permission to get access to Mueller's grand jury material, which is protected under federal law.

Boot emphasizes that considering how close-lipped Mueller's team was during the Russian Federation investigation, the fact that they are "now leaking for the first time in 22 months is an indication of how upset they are" and "how seriously" Barr has "blundered".

The Times report sparked another day of fevered speculation about the "real" content of the 400-page Mueller report, despite the attorney general's four-page summary of it.

Mr. Barr was also wary of departing from Justice Department practice not to disclose derogatory details in closing an investigation, according to two government officials familiar with Mr. Barr's thinking.

Democrats demanded to see the entire report, underlying evidence and materials.

Committee Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) said he would give Barr more time to "change his mind".

Under those regulations, at the conclusion of Mueller's investigation, Barr was required to provide Congress with "with an explanation of each action". "R. Crim. P. 6 (e)", which protects grand jury information.

That letter, according to Barr, "was not, and did not purport to be, an exhaustive recounting of the Special Counsel's investigation or report".

Both the Times and the Post reported that the Mueller team had prepared their own summaries of the report. That's not entirely correct, some investigators, dismissed by Trump supporters as "disgruntled" Democrat-supporting leakers, are telling intermediaries who are relaying it to the media.
