Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps Labeled A 'Terror Group'

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the United States had made "a vicious move" in designating the Revolutionary Guards as a foreign terrorist organisation, and Tehran vowed to take action against U.S. forces in the region.

"If reports prove to be true that the stupid USA administration intends to designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization, then the IRGC will also specify the United States army as a group (and target) like [ISIS] in all parts of the world, especially the Middle East", the commander was quoted as saying in the semi-official Fars News agency.

"We do not support Iran's Revolutionary Guards in Syria, but no country can declare another country's armed forces a terrorist organization".

Larijani, the speaker of the Iranian National Consultative Assembly, told Al-Jazeera he didn't believe the USA had "lost its mind to the extent that it would add the IRGC to its list of terrorist organizations".

Monday's U.S. move, formally under the State Department's purview, has been made as part of the White House's increasingly aggressive strategy towards Iran. IRGC-affiliated Javan daily said that any attack on the force's bases and facilities would be "recognized as a right" for Iran to respond.

The IRGC, which has roughly 125,000 military personnel and enjoys growing public support, is also actively cooperating in construction, infrastructure and relief projects. Iran now says it will designate U.S. Central Command as a "terrorist organization". Former State Department official Jason Blazakis, who spent his time in the terrorist labelling business, suggested that the commander of the Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, could well call upon his Shi'ite militias "to take actions against usa assets in places like Baghdad's Green Zone".

When addressing a foreign audience, Iranian officials instead tend to refer to the IRGC as a prominent anti-terrorist presence in the region, citing its conflict with Sunni terrorist groups like the Islamic State.

Pro-Israel lobbying group AIPAC also applauded President Trump for the move.

Designating the IRGC as terrorists can have real-world consequences, because the IRGC dominates many sectors of Iran's national economy.

The decision against the "official army of Iran. was incomprehensible", he said. Beijing is one of Tehran's close economic partners and also sided with Iran and Russian Federation in the Syrian conflict.

Labelling the Guards as a terrorist organisation will allow the USA to impose further sanctions - particularly affecting the business sector, given the IRGC's involvement in Iran's economy.

The designation, however, could significantly complicate USA military and diplomatic work, notably in Iraq, where many Shiite militias and Iraqi political parties have close ties to the Guard. Iran President Hassan Rouhani said that guard members would be dearer "than any other time in the hearts of Iranian nation", and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei claimed that America's "evil designs would not harm" the force. Qods Force, as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Iran responded by calling U.S. troops in the Middle East terrorists, and threatened to produce more advanced nuclear centrifuges.

"Who are you to label revolutionary institutions as terrorists?"

Washington's move against the Revolutionary Guards was the first time that the United States has branded part of a foreign government a terrorist group. The terrorist classification means that anyone doing business with the Revolutionary Guard risks a US jail term.
