Crew of crashed Ethiopian Boeing jet 'repeatedly performed recommended procedures'

"Since repetitive uncommanded aircraft nose down conditions are noticed.it is recommended that the aircraft control system shall be reviewed by the manufacturer", Dagmawit said.

Boeing said a statement on Wednesday: "We urge caution against speculating and drawing conclusions on the findings prior to the release of the flight data and the preliminary report".

News of the crash, combined with the crash of a Lion Air 737 Max 8 previous year, have put the American plane manufacturer under huge stress as the crashes were linked to a new flight control system that was installed on these jets. Both planes were relatively new 737 MAX 8 aircraft and both displayed similar flight behavior just prior to the crash, indicating that the MCAS system may have been linked to both crashes.

In October, all 189 people on board Lion Air Flight 610 were killed when the flight went down shortly after takeoff from Jakarta. "We continue to work with the FAA and other regulatory agencies on the certification of the software update", Boeing said.

In the news conference, Dagmawit referred to safety recommendations in the preliminary report that point to the new flight-control system on the MAX that seems to have activated inadvertently - the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS.

"We remain confident in the fundamental safety of the 737 MAX", CEO Dennis Muilenburg said in a statement.

Ethiopian investigators did not blame anyone for the crash, stressing the importance of worldwide rules requiring civil probes to focus on recommendations for safer flight. One source told ABC News they manually attempted to bring the nose of the plane back up by using the trim wheel.

"Aviation authorities shall verify that the review of the aircraft flight control system has been adequately addressed by the manufacturer before the release of the aircraft for operations".

While Ethiopian investigators announced the findings of the preliminary report, they have yet to publish the report itself, a move described by CNN anchor and aviation expert Richard Quest as "unusual".

Ethiopian investigators did not specifically mention the MCAS on Thursday.

But John Hansman, an aeronautics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said turning the MCAS system back on after disabling it would be a logical step for the pilots to take.

Ethiopian Airlines has said that their pilots followed the Boeing/FAA instructions to the letter but were unsuccessful in pulling the aircraft out of repeated nosedives, that ultimately ended in disaster.

Ethiopia is due to release its first report on Thursday.

Aviation authorities in Europe ordered the grounding of the 737 Max aircraft in early March following the crash.

A statement from Ethiopian Airlines on their twitter said: "Despite [the pilots"] hard work and full compliance with emergency procedures, it was very unfortunate that that could not recover from the persistence of nose diving'.

However, Moges told the New York Times after the news conference that the pilots turned MCAS on and off, but she couldn't say how many times.
