Trump criticises California governor Gavin Newsom for suspending executions

After Newsom's term is up, the future governor could choose to resume overseeing executions or continue the ban. In February, the association representing deputy district attorneys in Los Angeles County accused the state's elected officials of foot-dragging on enforcing the death penalty and of substituting their own values for the ratified votes of the majority of California's electorate.

Gavin Newsom, who was sworn in as the state's 40th governor in January, said statistics suggested at least one of the 737 inmates on California's death row - more than any other state - ought not to be there.

"Our death penalty system has been-by any measure-a failure", the remarks state.

He also argues that it doesn't act as a deterrent, wastes taxpayer dollars and is flawed because it is "irreversible and irreparable in the event of human error". Signs were also posted, reading: "Lethal Injection Facility is CLOSED per Executive Order N-09-19" and "Gas Chamber CLOSED per Executive Order "N-09-19".

An execution chamber in a file photo. Because the state hasn't executed anyone since 2006 due to legal challenges, Newsom's order is largely viewed as symbolic. No executions have been carried out since. There is absolutely no evidence that the death penalty makes Californians safer, and it is both incredibly costly and burdensome.

Marc Klaas, a prominent victim's rights advocate, said Newsom told him personally Tuesday of his intention to sign the order in Sacramento, and he is not happy.

There's no reliable evidence to suggest capital punishment deters murder or protects police, according to a 2012 report released by the National Academy of the Sciences. Though voters in 2016 narrowly approved a ballot measure to speed up the punishment, no condemned inmate faced imminent execution.

More than 60% of prisoners awaiting execution in California are people of color.

Gov. Gavin Newsom Suspends Death Penalty In California

Among the groups most supportive of the issue are white evangelical Protestants; more than 7 in 10 support the use of the death penalty.

If a single individual who temporarily holds the reins of power, even in the highly controversial and oft debated issue of the death penalty, can override that basic concept of government by the people then a severe crack appears in the foundation of the democracy.

Experts say support for executions in California has fallen considerably in recent decades.

Cox told Newsweek she hoped other states will follow California and "and direct their resources toward programs that actually work to deter and solve crime".

Newsom said his ultimate goal is to end capital punishment. She won her party's nomination nonetheless, losing to Republican Pete Wilson in the general election later that year.

As for what the California moratorium means, Mandery didn't put much weight behind the move. He added that he personally opposes the measure.

Today, it's hard to find a mainstream Democrat in California who supports the death penalty.
