Suspect In New Zealand Mosque Attack Appears In Court

The high school friend of a victim of the New Zealand mosque massacres said when he didn't hear back from a message asking him if he was OK, he just assumed he was out helping people impacted by the violence.

Labelling the attack as an act of terrorism, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has vowed to reform the country's gun laws.

The suspect in the shootings, 28-year-old white supremacist Brenton Harrison Tarrant, appeared in court Saturday amid strict security, shackled and wearing all-white prison garb, and showed no emotion when the judge read him one murder charge and said more would likely follow.

However he cautioned: "I will not be saying anything conclusive until we are absolutely convinced as to how many people were involved".

Tarrant was remanded without a plea until his next scheduled appearance in the South Island city's High Court on April 5.

Tarrant is expected to face additional charges and two others are in custody.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday wrote to his New Zealand counterpart expressing his deepest condolences to the bereaved families of the victims.

Police then rammed the gunman's vehicle and arrested him. Another seven people were killed at Linwood mosque and one more person died later at Christchurch Hospital.

All injured are undergoing treatment at Christchurch Hospital.

The head of the New Zealand Police Association, Chris Cahill, welcomed Ardern's comments and said previous attempts to introduce gun controls had failed partly because of diehard opponents to reform.

Syrian refugee Khaled Mustafa, who had arrived in New Zealand with his family just months ago, was amongst those killed on Friday.

It was the deadliest mass shooting in the country's modern history.

42-year-old Husne Ara Parvin from Bangladesh was shot dead when she was rushing to the male section of the mosque hoping that she could save her wheelchair-bound husband, according to one of her relatives who spoke to local media. But he said some people frustrated because "they want to get on with their grieving process".

The Pacific Music Awards organisation in New Zealand also expressed its shock and solidarity over the shootings.

Residents hug each other after paying their respects by placing flowers for the victims of the mosques attacks in Christchurch at the Masjid Umar mosque in Auckland on March 17, 2019.

Responding to commentary about police response times to the attacks, Commissioner Bush said: "I can tell you that within six minutes of police being called. police staff were on the scene".

Ms Ardern burst into prominence during New Zealand's 2017 election, feted globally as part of a new wave of progressive, young leaders that included France's Emmanuel Macron and Canada's Justin Trudeau.

Fifty people were killed and 50 injured in what is New Zealand's worst attack.

The PM said Tarrant was a licensed gun owner who allegedly used five weapons, including two semi-automatic weapons and two shotguns, which had been modified.

New Zealand has tried to tighten laws before but a strong gun lobby and culture of hunting has stymied efforts.
