Missouri River flooding prompts interstate to close north of Kansas City

River levels will be on the rise through Friday night with a few expected to reach flood stage over NE Iowa and many others to come close to flood stage.

The restrictions came as the river reached moderate flood stage at almost 32 feet on Friday at Omaha, where it's expected to crest at almost 34 feet on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The flood information service has issued a "Flooding is possible - be prepared" warning for the River Roch and the River Beal following anticipated heavy rainfall on Saturday 16 March.

The federal agency justifies its ominous reports based on the build up of snow in the northern stretches of the Mississippi River basin, high levels soil moisture, and the current volume of water already moving through the river and its tributaries.

In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers said flooding was impacting "homes, businesses, and cities and towns" across the state.

"The public is reminded to exercise extreme caution around all water bodies", the GRCA said. The Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownville, NE could also shut down due to rising flood waters.

At Clarksville, the NWS gave a greater than 95 percent chance of minor flooding (over 25 feet) and moderate flooding (over 31 feet) and a 88 percent chance of major flooding over that period. The flood stage at Kansas City is 32 feet.

"Things are moving and changing at a rapid pace", Douglas County Commissioner Mary Ann Borgeson said Friday at a news conference.

Flooding is also occurring along other rivers and creeks in the Midwest. The closure was reminiscent of historic flooding along the river in 2011 that saw segments of the interstate in western Iowa washed away.

Pete Ricketts said the state has experienced historic flooding in almost every region. "I have no place to go", said Dale Chaney of Percival.

The flooding had closed off main routes through parts of the region, said Jennifer Arthur, 44, a bartender at Jack's Place in Omaha. Water in that location is now subsiding, but only after a portion of the city was submerged.
