Michigan's new rules could make CBD products easier to find

There is a massive demand for CBD also known as cannabidiol, a product derived from hemp and produces calming effects like marijuana without getting you high.

Earlier this month, rival drugstore chain CVS announced it would start selling topical products infused with CBD including creams and salves. The one good thing about non-THC cannabidiol is that it is not psychoactive. Though anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD can be helpful with certain medical conditions, researchers in the United States have previously been unable to study the substance due to federal drug regulations. This includes products made from the marijuana plant, but excludes stalks, products made from the stalks and some products made from seeds.

But as long as people continue to pursue affordable alternatives to pharmaceuticals, CBD products will remain in the public's eye.

And it creates an industrial hemp program with cultivators and processors licensed by the Ohio Department of Agriculture, "after going through background checks and determining Global Positioning System coordinates for plots of land designated to grow hemp".

In an amusing decision, Congress gave a legal clearance to industrial hemp production. Products have popped up online, in medical marijuana dispensaries and health food stores, and at farmers' markets.

The market for CBD products with almost non-detectable levels of THC has exploded in recent years and is expected to exceed $22 billion by 2022. In a recent interviewwith Brookings Institution, outgoing FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb said it could take several years before the agency fully legalizes CBD for use in food products and dietary supplements. This is because both CBD and THC are active ingredients in FDA-approved drugs.
