India disappointed after China blocks United Nations move to list Azhar global terrorist

"Not a word comes out of his mouth when China acts against India", tweeted Mr. Gandhi after China used the "hold" option to block India's efforts to rally permanent members of the UNSC.

It said in a statement it would continue to pursue "all available avenues to ensure that terrorist leaders who are involved in heinous attacks on our citizens are brought to justice".

China placed a "technical hold" on the request, according to a note from China's United Nations mission to the committee, seen by Reuters. It had previously prevented the Security Council's Islamic State and al Qaeda sanctions committee from sanctioning Azhar in 2016 and 2017.

According to the listing rules of the Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee, if no objection is received by the end of the no-objection period, the decision will be deemed adopted, meaning that Azhar will become a UN-designated global terrorist. The opposition party also slammed China over the development.

But China said it needed more time to examine the request, asking for a hold.

In 2017, Beijing also blocked a move by the U.S., the United Kingdom and France to designate Azhar as a global terrorist by the UN. Azhar financially supported Jaish-e Mohammad since its founding.

US National Security Advisor John Bolton on Monday said that he had spoken with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to "encourage meaningful steps against JeM and other terrorist groups operating from Pakistan".

Gandhi has asked Modi to tell the nation that it was a BJP-led government which released Azhar from an Indian jail in 1999.

The State Department referred to this statement on Wednesday when asked about the latest developments in NY.

"The US and China share a mutual interest in achieving regional stability and peace, and ... a failure to designate Azhar would run counter to this goal", Palladino added.

Congressman Brad Sherman described the Chinese move as unacceptable. China had earlier blocked, at the behest of Pakistan, several attempts by India, France, the United Kingdom, and the USA to sanction Azhar under UN Resolution 1267 for links to Al-Qaeda. "This is unacceptable", he said. Several American think-tank members slammed China for its decision to delay the Azhar listing. If China does not stand in the way today, then it would be a major from the past two decades.

Since February 14, when a suicide attack targeted a bus full of Indian soldiers in India-occupied Kashmir's Pulwama region, India has been blaming Pakistan for orchestrating the attack. "This one won't be undone by another romantic stroll through Wuhan", he said, referring to a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in April a year ago.
