And Al Sharpton, the prominent black activist and television personality, told BuzzFeed News that Herring and Northam should resign and that he'd lead protests against the two politicians.

But there's a big problem with Herring taking over for an embattled governor facing a blackface scandal: Herring has admitted to wearing blackface in college in the 1980s too.

Cox, a former high school teacher who has served in the state's Republican-controlled House since 1990, said he was not convinced the yearbook scandal met the threshold for an impeachable offense. He called the controversies a disturbing circumstance.

Herring's admission came after a meeting with the Virginia legislative black caucus, and before any unfortunate photos were dug up.

While Cox has also joined the chorus of voices calling for Northam's resignation, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports the 61-year-old has no plans to oust Northram from the governor's seat.

"We've got a lot to digest", the group's chairman, Democratic delegate Lamont Bagby, said Wednesday. Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax has been accused of sexual assault, a claim which he adamantly denies, and Attorney General Mark Herring has admitted to dressing in blackface as a part of a rapper costume when he was 19. But he made no mention of any photo.

A Stanford fellow's allegations that Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax sexually assaulted her at the 2004 Democratic National Convention have added another layer to the scandals roiling Virginia politics.

"We have black kids who make true mistakes like going to a playground with a toy gun, and they lose their life", she said, pointing to Tamir Rice, a black boy who was 12 years old when he was shot by police in OH in 2014.

Fairfax has repeatedly denied her allegations, saying the encounter was consensual and he is the victim of a strategically timed political smear.

At the Capitol, lawmakers were dumbstruck over the day's fast-breaking developments, with Democratic Sen. GOP House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert said it would be "reckless" to comment. Fairfax would replace Northam as governor if Northam resigns.

"At no time did she express to me any discomfort or concern about our interactions, neither during that encounter, nor during the months following it, when she stayed in touch with me, nor the past 15 years", he said in a statement.

"I am deeply, deeply sorry for the pain that I cause with this revelation", he said.

Racial discrimination is more explicit in Virginia, which grapples with a legacy of slavery and white supremacy, but it also exists - in a more subtle form - in Oregon, Brown said.

Yet another possibility is that Northam resigns (though he's shown no sign he's inclined to do so, even pledging to hire a private investigator to probe the racist photo), Fairfax ascends, appoints a new lieutenant governor and then resigns himself.

Last Friday, a picture of a man in blackface on Northam's medical school yearbook page surfaced. Florida Secretary of State Michael Ertel resigned on January 28, after just two weeks in office, when photos surfaced of him from a 2005 Halloween party.

"We're really wanting to be clear that we need our Democratic leadership to change... we really want a party that's open to all without regard to race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, and we encourage black leadership, indigenous leadership, woman leadership, LGBTQ... and marginalized folks to really step into political participation while challenging the validity of Virginia's white supremacist Democratic party", the organizer stressed.

The entire Democrat leadership of the USA state of Virginia is crumbling under allegations of racism and sexual assault.

Tyson's allegation finally emerged over the weekend amid calls for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to step down over a racist photo in his medical school yearbook - which would put Fairfax in the top job.
