US charges former Air Force officer with spying for Iran

"Monica Witt is charged with revealing to the Iranian regime a highly classified intelligence program and the identity of a U.S. Intelligence Officer", Asst.

Former US Air Force intelligence agent Monica Elfriede Witt, 39, defected to Iran in 2013, according to the Justice Department.

USA officials said Witt supplied classified information about US intelligence officers after defecting to Iran in 2013. During her time working for the government, Witt had access to "classified information, including details of ongoing counterintelligence operations, true names of sources, and the identities of US agents involved in the recruitment of those sources", according to the indictment.

She defected to Iran in 2013 and presumably still lives there, USA officials said.

Witt is charged with two counts of delivering military information to a foreign government and one count of conspiracy.

That year she travelled to Iran to attend an anti-America conference sponsored by the New Horizon Organization.

The IQNA noted that Witt "referred to the extensive propaganda against Iran and Islam in the USA, saying that the American people are under the influence of the propaganda". Investigators say her reasons for defecting were "ideological".

Over the same period, the four Iranians charged in the same indictment, named as Mojtaba Masoumpour, Behzad Mesri, Hossein Parvar and Mohamad Paryar, as well as unnamed co-conspirators, are alleged to have mounted hacking attacks against the current and former USA intelligence agents Witt had identified. She posed as a United States veteran who had become disillusioned with her country's policies and appeared on Iranian TV to criticize her government. The poster identified Witt as an English teacher, whose friends believed she was missing somewhere in Afghanistan or Tajikistan.

The DOJ reports Witt provided members of Iran's intelligence service with a copy of her resume back in 2013.

Specifically, between January and May 2015, the Cyber Conspirators, using fictitious and imposter accounts, attempted to trick their targets into clicking links or opening files that would allow the conspirators to deploy malware on the target's computer.

After leaving the Air Force, she worked as a defense and intelligence contractor, but by 2012 her politics had begun to turn.

As part of its action, the United States also charged four Iranian nationals who it said were involved in the cyber attacks.

The hackers, using imposter Facebook personas, then targeted those same officials and were even able at one point to join a private Facebook group composed primarily of retired government workers, the indictment says.

In conjunction with the indictments, the US Treasury Department has announced sanctions again two organizations - New Horizon Organization and Net Peygard Samavat Company - and nine affiliated individuals for supporting spying operations against US intelligence personnel. The connections she made at that event with dual Iranian-American citizens enabled her to defect the following year. For me? Well, I loved the work, and I am endeavoring to put the training I received to good use instead of evil.?? "Thanks for giving me the opportunity". Mojtaba Masoumpour, Behzad Mesri, Hossein Parvar and Mohamad Paryar got ahold of malware that tracks a person's computer activity, accesses their web camera and captures what they type.

However, one agent who friended the fake account added the hackers to a Facebook group filled with USA government agents, allowing them to gather more information, according to the indictment.
