Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Forecasts Early Spring

Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil Forecasts Early Spring

After Punxsutawny Phil and Staten Island Chuck predicted an early spring, Gordy followed suit. Members of Punxsutawney Phil's top hat-wearing inner circle revealed their forecast at sunrise on Saturday, as the Midwest and East Coast recovered from this week's unsafe polar vortex and freezing cold temperatures.

According to lore, that means an early spring is expected this year. Sounds territorial. Sorry local groundhogs, guess there can be only one official groundhog.

Punxsutawney Phil has his own inner-circle - a group of people who are his caretakers.

These Pennsylvanian groundhogs enjoyed quiet lives until 1887, when a groundhog-hunting newspaper editor declared that Punxsutawney's groundhog Phil was the nation's only "true" weather-forecasting groundhog. Pennsylvania continues to be the hotspot for all Groundhog Day celebrations even today!

The groundhog did not see his shadow when he came out of his burrow at at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where thousands had gathered to celebrate Groundhog Day. As per EW, it's called Groundhog Day: Like Father Like Son, and it will arrive at as-yet-unspecified date.

Preparations for Groundhog Day 2019 began back on February 3, 2018 - right after Punxsutawney Phil issued his forecast of six more weeks of winter for that year.

Traditionally, Groundhog Day helped people to predict the weather for the year ahead.

If you are not from North America, Groundhog Day might just come as a surprise! Apparently it was good, too - Edwin Evans-Thirlwell also put it on his game of the year list for us - so handing them the actual Groundhog Day game seems more than appropriate.
