Apple's 'Netflix for news' faces publisher resistance over revenue split terms

Apple's 'Netflix for news' faces publisher resistance over revenue split terms

Now according to Bloomberg Apple plans to announce their new streaming services at an event that will happen on March 25th, 2019.

According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Apple has pitched to publishers that it plans to keep half of the revenue generation by the subscription service, whereas the remaining half will be distributed among the publishers based on the time users engaged with their articles. The event will reportedly take place at the Steve Jobs Theater on the Apple Park campus in California.

Apple also reportedly wants outlets to commit to supplying news for at least a year, which has also faced resistant from publishers who would prefer a shorter commitment.

News publishers are also concerned over the lack of access about the customer information from Apple as they would like to use that date to market their products to the customers directly.

However, Apple has been holding events in March for years, so it's not entirely surprising news. That includes Apple's own movies and TV streaming service, which is expected to launch in April. The paid service will launch by the summer, the people said. "That's with just what YouTube monetizes and doesn't include [the ads and sponsorships] that we sell", he said.

No single model has proven particularly fruitful, and a subscription service akin to the one expected from Apple may become a popular alternative.

A premium news subscription could cost around $10 per month, the same that Apple Music now costs. In comparison, Apple's developer program only takes a 30-percent cut of the revenue generated from app purchases in the App Store.

"While the exact disagreement between Apple and HBO isn't known", the report reads, "media companies have been concerned about data sharing and revenue splits as Apple tries to aggregate existing services in new ways".

The WSJ reports that the New York Times and The Washington Post still haven't agreed to license their content to the service because of the terms.

Apple, CBS, HBO, Starz and Viacom declined to comment.
