Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., (R) arrives with her guest, Ana Maria Archila, to hear President Donald Trump deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on February 5.
Freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is bringing along a guest - one of the two women who confronted Arizona Sen. "Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country", he said, as cameras caught shots of members of Congress who call themselves democratic socialists or advocate their ideas, including New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Independent Sen.
Immediately after condemning the "brutality" of former President Nicolás Maduro's authoritarian regime in Venezuela, Trump turned to socialism in America, apparently referring to Ocasio-Cortez's brand of democratic socialism.
Archila and another woman, Maria Gallagher, made a decision to go to Flake's office, where they saw his statement of support for Kavanaugh after the judge and Christine Blasey Ford testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Kavanaugh was eventually confirmed and now sits on the Supreme Court.
"I had to ask myself, is this a campaign stop or is this a State of the Union?" she said on an MSNBC post-speech special. 'Well behaved women rarely make history - that's right!' says Archil while the camera rolls.
Ocasio-Cortez also addressed the situation on Instagram Stories, where she referred to Trump as the "guy who threw paper towels" at Hurricane Maria survivors. Archila said. "We just heard a woman yesterday, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, pour her heart out and tell about attacks to protect our country".
The tyro lawmaker replied that the conversation was "lovely" and that she and Corbyn shared "a great hope in the peace, prosperity, and justice that everyday people can create when we uplift one another across class, race, and identity both at home and overseas". Several Twitter users replied to Ocasio-Cortez's tweet, pointing her to longstanding issues with antisemitism within the Labour party.
After the viral elevator confrontation, Flake called for a delay in voting on the nomination until an FBI investigation into the allegations against the nominee could take place.
Branches of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-whose membership has soared to record levels since Trump's election-said they expect a nice membership bump after the president's address.
