Syrian air defences intercept 'missiles' near Damascus: State media

Most of the missiles fired by "Israeli military planes" were intercepted at around 11:00 pm (2100 GMT), the source said.

The official news agency SANA reported that Syrian air defense batteries opened fire on "hostile Israel missiles" and intercepted "most" of them.

Israeli warplanes carried out an airstrike on a depot in the Damascus global airport at the late hours of January 11, a military source told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Israel had previously said it will not tolerate Iran seeking to establish permanent military bases in Syria as the war there winds down after seven years of fighting.

Only a warehouse in the Damascus International Airport was damaged, according to the statement.

Shortly after 11PM, Syrian media began reporting that explosions were being heard throughout Damascus, along with simultaneous reports from Lebanon claiming there was an abundance of Israeli fighter jets operating in the region.

The TV channel noted that Syrian air defense systems continue repelling an enemy attack at Damascus.

The last Israeli attack reported by Syrian state media was on December 25, when a missile attack wounded three Syrian soldiers.

In September 2018, Russian Federation equipped the Syrian forces with the S-300 air defense missile system, but local reports said the advanced system hasn't been used yet.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday confirmed his nation destroyed Iranian weapons caches in Syria's Damascus airport during airstrikes over the weekend.

An unidentified Syrian official was quoted by state media as saying Israeli aircraft coming from the south fired several missiles at areas near Damascus about 45 minutes before midnight on Friday.
