Netflix has also been upping its investment in global markets.

And those mile-high numbers are apparently carrying over to their new shows, including the British-based dramedy Sex Education and former Lifetime thriller YOU.

The company said it had expected its margin to dip because of the number of shows that launched in the quarter. In case you missed it, Netflix this week announced its biggest price hike in history, with the basic plan jumping from $7.99 to $8.99 a month, the standard plan jumping from $10.99 to $12.99 a month, and the premium plan jumping from $13.99 to $15.99 a month.

Netflix forecast $4.5 billion in revenue for the first quarter of this year and the addition of 9 million more subscribers, which would put its total at 148 million.

Netflix (NFLX) said Thursday that it added almost nine million new paying subscribers during the final three months of 2018, beating its own expectations of 7.6 million new subscribers.

In a letter to shareholders Thursday, Netflix said it expects the price hike to be "phased in" for existing customers in the first two quarters of 2019.

Netflix Inc. shares slipped in late trading after fourth-quarter revenue came in below Wall Street estimates, a sign an explosion of new programming failed to hook enough viewers.

"In the USA, we earn about 10 percent of television screen time", Netflix announced in its shareholder letter, "and less than that of mobile screen time".

"We compete so broadly with all these different providers that any one provider entering only matters on the margin", Hastings said of the competitive landscape in streaming television. "Instead of doing Xbox or Fortnite or YouTube or HBO or a long list, we want to win and provide a better experience". He noted that streaming options from Amazon and Hulu are now slightly more affordable than Netflix.

In yet another public relations headache for the company, Netflix is now looking into whether actual footage of a deadly 2013 event in Canada appeared in Bird Box after it was discovered in at least one other production.

"People are talking about it, posting about it, tweeting about it, challenging themselves to do different things - which we want them to be very careful when they do", Sarandos said of shows triggering cultural buzz.

The financial announcement comes days after it was announced that Netflix's subscription fees were to rise.
