May warns of catastrophe if lawmakers don't back Brexit deal

Labour, meanwhile, wants to topple the government by forcing a general election, and on Sunday leader Jeremy Corbyn indicated his party could bring a no-confidence ballot within days if May loses the vote on her Brexit deal.

Lawmakers in the United Kingdom are set to vote Tuesday on May's Brexit plan after she shelved plans for a December vote when it became clear she would lose that vote.

Urging lawmakers to support her deal, Mrs May will say that, ahead of the 2016 referendum vote, both her Conservative party and the opposition Labour party made it clear they would implement the British people's decision.

"People's faith in the democratic process and their politicians would suffer catastrophic harm", May will say in a speech in the city of Stoke-on-Trent on Monday, according to extracts released by her office.

"So my message to Parliament this weekend is simple: it is time to forget the games and do what is right for our country".

An EU official said: "Should the prime minister survive and inform us that she needs more time to win round parliament to a deal, a technical extension up to July will be offered".

As May made a last-ditch appeal to members of Parliament, the Guardian reported the European Union is expecting a request from London to extend the March 29 deadline for leaving the bloc.

Under the rebels' plan, reported in the Sunday Times, the Government would lose control of parliamentary business which would threaten Brexit legislation and the Government's ability to govern.

Straw polls show more than 200 MPs back May's deal, while about 100 support a no-deal Brexit and other factions advocate a "soft Brexit" that keeps Britain close to the European Union or a second referendum.

The Brexiteer said the millions who voted for Brexit would feel "cheated" if the United Kingdom did not exit the EU.

Mr Corbyn said that if he forced a national election and his party won, Brexit may have to be delayed while they negotiated a new deal with the EU. Only after that would an election be called.

Brexit minister Stephen Barclay told BBC TV that persuading enough lawmakers to support the deal would be "challenging" but that even if it was rejected, he suspected parliament would ultimately support something "along the lines of this deal".

"I'm not saying for one minute that the whole economy will grind to a halt, but there are very specific industries in this country for which a no deal Brexit will have an immediate negative impact".

Insisting that he had not given up hope of victory in next week's vote, he said: "What is important is for MPs on all sides, Brexiters and Remainers, whatever our disagreements, to say "We are democrats and the most important thing now is to make sure that we really do deliver Brexit".

The EU is waiting to see the outcome of Tuesday's vote - and the margin of the expected defeat - before considering its response, officials said, with some predicting that May will have to delay Brexit.

The BBC estimates that May's deal is likely to be supported by about 240 MPs, far short of the number needed for passage.

Those opposed to the clause argue it could tie the United Kingdom into the EU's orbit indefinitely.
