Kids Removed From Schweizer-Reneke School Amid Protests Over Segregation Seating

After meeting school staff and education department officials, Mr Lehare confirmed that the form teacher in question had been suspended.

Netwerk24 noted that the woman was severely traumatised. "The racial act aimed to only have white learners at this school", he said.

Race relations remain tense in South Africa 25 years after the end of white-minority apartheid rule, with fierce racism-related controversies erupting regularly on social media and in politics.

"So everything they are saying is not true".

A lot of them spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing their children would be victimised.

"They created a group parents and teachers group chat on WhatsApp past year".

The school is the only primary school in town, while there are other schools in the nearby Ipelegeng township.

A mother of one of the pupils at Laerskool Schweizer-Reneke says racism is rife.

BBC also reported that demonstrators claimed black beachgoers were unfairly targeted, but the firm denies closing the beach and says it only acts to protect residents from crime. We had expected the principal would give an excuse that they had put our children separately from the others because of language.

She said later that morning they received a WhatsApp message from the teacher to show how the students were going.

"When I arrived to fetch my son in the afternoon, the situation was the same".

"This was meant to be an exciting day for me but it's not".

After the break the children were moved to a different seating plan and were no longer separated by race. I want my child to continue studying here and I don't have a problem with [him] learning Afrikaans.

The school hasn't responded to requests for comment.

"'As a result, blacks including coloured and Indian people have no option but to take their children to such racist private schools for better education", Mr Sigudu added.

Another parent said in most cases, teachers weren't too blame. It is a mechanism whites use to force blacks to drop out of school. My child doesn't know what racism is. So I ask everybody, they must keep calm.

He said they have since heard that there's an SMS circulating telling the parents of white pupils not to take their children to school on Friday.

"There was no intent of racism or segregation from the teacher's side. Acts or practice of racism have no place in our society and can not be tolerated 24 years into our democracy", read the union's statement.

The Human Rights Commission will be sending a team to the school.

SAHRC spokesperson Gail Smith said the commission would work closely with the department to investigate the allegations.

As a effect, the province's education minister Sello Lehari was forced to issue the following disclaimer after paying the school a visit. Schools are platforms for teaching and learning - not only a formal curriculum - but also fundamental value systems.

We've been told that this never happens at the school under normal circumstances.
