HTC Unveils Vive Pro Eye with integrated eye-tracking at CES 2019

Much like Oculus with the announcement of the Quest in late 2018, HTC has today announced the Vive COSMOS, a new standalone VR headset.

That HTC, which reported a 62 percent drop in revenue year-on-year in its last earnings call, is hoping for virtual reality to revitalise its business is no secret: The company has been pushing its Vive platform heavily, from launching the high-end Vive Pro and self-contained Vive Focus to announcing software subscription offerings, big-budget film tie-ins, in-house studios, and even accelerator and venture capital programmes created to boost uptake of VR technology. There's no pricing yet, but it's supposed to launch in the second quarter of 2019. This data, when tracked, enables developers and others to determine where users are looking most often, making it easier to optimize or adjust the VR experience to improve training environments, determine what holds the user's interest the most, and more. The current HTC Vive headset only supports wireless connectivity through an adapter. Some key benefits mentioned potential using the Eye include better product design and user research, better accessibility, increased speed of VR interactions and more efficient CPU and GPU usage. That's right. This headset tracks your eye movements.

So come on HTC - let's hear more about this Cosmos headset. 'We believe Cosmos will make VR more easily accessible to those who may not have invested in VR before and also be a superior experience for VR enthusiasts. That's intentional as Cosmos won't rely on any external tracking sensors, which points strongly at onboard internal sensors.

Pro VR users are being targeted with the release of the new HTC Vive Pro Eye. Lockheed Martin is using the Vive Pro Eye to help train student pilots, for example. "VR and AR need to be about experiences, not applications", he said. It announced a new VivePort Infinity plan, which it says is the world's first "infinite VR subscription". HTC also hinted Cosmos might one day hook up to a phone. Another notable feature of the Vive Cosmos is customization, with HTC promising that the company will keep upgrading the device with a wide array of modules that will be showcased soon.
