Graham urging Trump to reopen government for a few weeks

Even as US President Donald Trump is consumed by his standoff with Democrats over the border and the US government shutdown, a potentially larger battle looms for the White House.

However, he said Mr Trump told him, "let's make a deal, then open up the government". House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, insists Trump reopen the government first.

The US government shutdown is now officially the longest on record after 22 days elapsed without a funding agreement.

If no progress is made, he said, then Trump should declare a national emergency as a way to get money to build his wall, a plan not popular with some fellow Republicans.

But the Post poll also found a hardening of Republican support for a wall, with 70 per cent now saying they strongly support the wall, up from 58 per cent a year earlier.

Trump told Sean Hannity this week he has "the absolute right" to make such a declaration if an agreement can not be reached with congressional Democrats on funding for his proposed border wall. "See if we can get a deal", Graham said. Democrats overwhelmingly blame Republicans: 85% of Democrats lay blame at Congressional Republicans and Trump.

Democrats oppose such a declaration but may be powerless to stop it.

An attempt Thursday by moderate Republican senators to broker a deal that would have traded immigration protections for undocumented "Dreamers" brought to the United States as children in return for wall money collapsed after Vice President Mike Pence rejected it.

While a national emergency would provide some legal framework for his administration to freely move funds toward construction of a barrier, it would nearly certainly face court challenges.

"I tried to see if we could open up the government for a limited period of time to negotiate a deal", Graham said. Sixty-nine percent of the respondents who believe that there is a crisis at the border also felt that a border wall would help (amounting to 31 percent of the total respondents). The president expects the justices will strike DACA down as unconstitutional; in his favor is the court's conservative-leaning majority, secured after Trump filled two vacancies.

"The damage done to our Country from a badly broken Border - Drugs, Crime and so much that is bad - is far greater than a Shutdown, which the Dems can easily fix as soon as they come back in Washington!"

The president didn't elaborate on the reporter or the news program he had in mind while tweeting, but Washington Post's Philip Rucker identified himself as Trump's target. We are instead left with a narrative of a powerless President, stuck alone in the White House, waiting on the actions of others before he can do his job.

Airport spokesman Greg Chin said the decision to close some parts was a "precautionary measure to optimise staffing" during peak times, when large numbers of cruise-line passengers leave the city.

But Trump has turned his single-minded push for more walls into a political crusade that opponents say is a stunt to stoke xenophobia in his right-wing voter base while willfully ignoring the border's complex realities. He reiterated those same feelings on Sunday during a Fox interview with Chris Wallace. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union".
