Flu Season Lands Hard on NY and the Southern U.S.

An unidentified man from Eastern Iowa is the first to succumb to the flu virus this season, the Iowa Department of Public Health is reporting. People don't seem to be as sick as they were this time past year, but state officials are warning this flu season could get worse soon.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the predominant flu strain circulating is not H1N1, which targets children.

The overall hospitalization rate was 5.4 per 100,000 population. Wisconsin health officials say while the flu season is now mild, it hasn't reached its peak yet.

Influenza activity is considered moderate as the US enters the peak of flu season.

For the same week previous year (week 51, December 17-23, 2017), the CDC reported three influenza-associated pediatric deaths.

For Week 51, the geographic spread of influenza was reported as widespread in Guam and 11 states; Puerto Rico and 19 states reported regional activities; 15 states reported local activities; the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and three states reported sporadic activities; and two states did not report.

This year's vaccine is considered to be a good match for the strain of the virus now spreading, but in order to get the maximum benefit from the shot, 80 per cent of the population must be immunized.

The silver lining this flu season is that the strain found this year is the same from last year.

"We're getting about a half a percent each week, but we do expect that to increase", said Dr. The more vaccinated people there are, the less potential there is for flu to circulate, she explains.

But in Nova Scotia, for instance, less than 50 per cent of people have received the flu vaccine.

Single-week numbers of laboratory-confirmed flu cases have started to increase in DE, as well. People at high risk of flu complications include pregnant women, older adults, young children and people with chronic medical conditions like asthma, cerebral palsy, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, kidney or liver disease, muscular dystrophy, obesity or sickle cell disease. "Meaning if you get that vaccine it's likely to protect you this year", said Welch.

Dr Kelleher urged people to get the flu vaccine if they have not done so already and to avoid sending children to school or going to work if you have symptoms of the flu.

When you are sick, try to limit your contact with others.
