Urban Meyer stepping down at Ohio State, Ryan Day to take over

Buckeyes athletic director Gene Smith tweeted in September that Meyer would be the head coach for "quite some time", following a report that linked Day to the job.

"A myriad of factors contributed to Meyer's decision", Thamel wrote, "but sources say foremost among them was his happiness with the state of the Ohio State program he inherited seven years ago". He was also suspended the first three games of the season after the school conducted an investigation into the behavior of one of his assistant coaches. Meyer has seen plenty of success as a football coach, which has earned him millions of dollars through the years. This time seems infinitely more permanent.

Brown said he loves and admires Meyer, and will miss him in coaching. "I love this program and its student-athletes and I want Buckeye Nation to know how hard we are going to work to ensure this program remains the very best in the country".

Meyer has a career record of 186-32 in 17 seasons, including stops at Bowling Green, Utah and Florida.

He has also won a trio of national championships. He is an Ohio State guy.

Lesmerises asked if he was fairly certain, "I am certain yes, Meyer said".

For the most part, recruits have been receptive to Day's ascension to head coach.

Meyer's first national title win at Florida began a run where the SEC won seven straight titles from 2006-12, boosting the conference's value and innovating both the league and college football as a whole. Yes, the Buckeyes exploited the Wolverines' elite defense in The Game, but that doesn't take away from the strides MI has made. He was caught lying and deleting text messages by a university committee investigating why Meyer harbored a domestic abuser such as Smith on his staff for years.

A news conference was scheduled for today during which Meyer is to announce his retirement, with co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day appointed the team's 25th head coach. While he said the headaches he has been dealing with started to hit "real hard" last season and again this year. he is young by coaching standards at age 54. He took a hiatus from coaching, but he wasn't done.

Florida State - Willie Taggart just finished his first season at Florida State and it resulted in the Seminoles 36-year bowl streak being snapped.
