On Thursday morning, Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to lying to Congress about Trump's efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow during the course of his presidential campaign.

Cohen, 52, is scheduled to be sentenced December 12 in Manhattan federal court after pleading guilty to lying to Congress and to campaign finance law violations involving alleged hush money payments to two women. This sequence followed last July's pattern, when, on the eve of Trump's meeting with Putin in Helsinki, Mueller filed criminal charges against 12 Russian intelligence officers in connection with Moscow's alleged Russian interference in the presidential election in support of Trump.

One key line from the memorandum is the following, which indicates that Cohen was in communication with White House staff and legal counsel while he was preparing his false statements to Congress.

"If I did do it, there would have been nothing wrong", Trump said.

Trump's anger about the investigation raises the possibility that his answers might be contradicted by Cohen, Manafort and others. He was perfectly within his rights to continue to run his businesses even as he pursued the presidency, he said.

We're not privy to what lies Manafort has been telling, or whether this is actually bad news for Mueller's investigation.

Cohen and prosecutors referred to Trump as "Individual 1" throughout Thursday's proceedings. But we do see this pattern of close allies of the president being convicted of not telling the truth about their contacts with Russian Federation.
