Saudi crown prince visits Algiers without meeting president

The crown prince flew into the Argentine capital on Wednesday under a heavy cloud - in the midst of a global furor over the brutal killing of one of his most prominent critics, US -based Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, at the kingdom's Istanbul consulate October 2 - predictions were rife that he would be a pariah among his peers.

Khashoggi is said to have used the WhatsApp thread to engage in stern criticism of Bin Salman. The G20 summit is the Crown Prince's first major gathering of global political leaders since the murder, and his attending the summit in itself was a calculated risk.

During the visit, the Saudi crown prince met with Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia to discuss bilateral relations, developments of the oil market, and global and regional issues of common interest including the situation in Palestine, Libya, Syria and Yemen. The two hoped to disparage the government's propaganda on social media.

Saudi authorities have vehemently denied the crown prince was involved.

US intelligence assessments and experts have said the crown prince, who controls all levers of power in Saudi Arabia, likely ordered or at least knew about the killing.

Theresa May insisted today she had been "robust" with the Saudi Crown Prince accused of ordering the murder of Jamal Khashoggi after meeting him at the G20.

"I am a man of my word".

Urging Saudi authorities to cooperate with their Turkish counterparts, Mr. Conte underlined guarantees he said he had received that the investigation would help solve - rather than cover up - the case.

"And when it is done, when you complete that analysis, there's no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi".

During the visit, the two countries witnessed the launch of five partnership projects between the Kingdom and Algeria, within the framework of the 14th session of the Algerian-Saudi Business Council held on Monday on the sidelines of the Crown Prince's visit to Algeria. "While economics are important, our belief in universal human rights and democratic principles must never be subservient to them", he said.
