Flights suspended at Hanover airport after man drives auto onto runway

They said the man tried to follow a landing plane operated by Greek airline Aegean.

Take-offs and landings of planes are suspended while police investigated.

The detained suspect's auto was registered in Poland, the German NDR broadcaster reported. The auto was stopped by police, and the man driving the vehicle was detained after being "overwhelmed" by the police.

Bomb disposal experts were examining the auto. The incident originally unfolded at around 1530 local time, and the airport said that flights resumed at 2006.

He managed to drive several hundred metres before being stopped.

The man was believed to have acted alone.

Police sources said a terrorist motive could be "basically ruled out".

The driver could have been on drugs as the incident unfolded, NDR said, adding that the quick on-site drug test was "positive". Police said they couldn't give further information on where he came from because he wasn't carrying an identity card.

According to Eurocontrol, the airport remains closed until approximately 22:00 UTC. Authorities eventually towed away the auto and searched outside the airport for other possible threats.

'Arriving flights are diverting, departures have been suspended after a vehicle driver reportedly tried to enter the apron.

Hannover Airport (HAJ) is the ninth-largest airport in Germany, handling 5.8 million passengers in 2017.
