Utah mayor killed in Afghanistan in ‘apparent insider attack’

The assailant was a member of the Afghan security forces who was immediately killed by other Afghan forces, the statement said. And they offered heavy praise to Taylor for his service, both in the military and in civic matters. The injured individual was medically evacuated to Bagram Airfield, where they are in stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

Taylor leaves behind his wife, Jennie, and seven children.

Taylor announced his deployment to his constituents in early January via Facebook Live, explaining that he had been called to help train Afghan commando units after President Donald Trump had ordered an increase in the number of United States troops in Afghanistan.

Friends described Taylor as a passionate and outgoing mayor who was continually looking for new ways to serve his country and his state.

'I am proud of the fearless Afghan and U.S. soldiers I serve with.

When Taylor left Utah for Afghanistan, North Ogden schoolchildren lined the streets and cheered for him as he waved from a motorcade.

Taylor's body is scheduled to be flown back to Dover Air Force Base today and funeral arrangements are pending, he said.

Over the past 10 months, Taylor posted periodic updates of his Afghanistan service to Facebook, often sounding and looking optimistic. "So this makes it additionally bitter for us", Burton said.

Taylor, who joined the service in 2003, had insurance, Burton said, and will also receive the aid of a "casualty assistance officer".

According to the Defense Casualty Analysis System, eight USA military members, likely not including this latest casualty, have been killed and 95 have been wounded in Afghanistan so far in 2018. Taylor was elected to the city council of North Ogden, about 45 miles north of Salt Lake City, in 2009 and became mayor in 2013, according to the city council website. "I do believe that Major Taylor felt he was among friends, with people he was working with".

"Initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces". He thanked the veterans of North Ogden who were gathered there.

Taylor's death was mourned by Utah Lieutenant Governor Spencer Cox, who wrote that the Afghan war "has once again cost us the best blood of a generation".

The Utah National Guard has not publicly confirmed or discussed the circumstances of Taylor's death, which was confirmed to CNN by a government official.

Ten Utah National Guard soldiers have now died since 2003 in service of military efforts in Iraq or Afghanistan, according to National Guard data.
