US Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns

Mr. Whitaker has criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between the president's Republican campaign and Russian Federation.

"Sessions did not do the thing he could have done to better protect Rosenstein, and through Rosenstein, the Mueller investigation", Vladeck said.

Sessions had recused himself from overseeing the investigation due to his role on the Trump campaign.

"Special Counsel Mueller must be allowed to complete his work without interference".

According to Dean, Trump won't necessarily fire special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collaboration between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation during the 2016 election - but may be aiming "to undercut [Mueller] by the people around him".

A Justice Department representative confirmed that Whitaker would assume supervision of the Russian Federation investigation and the special counsel leading it, Robert Mueller, from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. "I say that given that the president was asked a question at the press conference this morning, he brushed it off, said "We'll deal with it later.' And he's clearly been thinking about it - and 'later" meant he's not necessarily going to fire Mueller, he's going to undercut him by the people around him".

Through his CNN role, where he was deeply critical of the Mueller probe, Whitaker got to know Trump, who saw him on TV and later met in person. "And that attorney-general doesn't fire Bob Mueller, but he just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt", said Mr Whitaker in an interview with CNN previous year.

After the special counsel was appointed in May 2017, Trump also channeled his fury toward Sessions, accusing him of "disloyalty."

In his resignation letter, Sessions touted the department's initiatives, saying that the Justice Department had taken on "transnational gangs that are bringing violence and death across our borders and protected national security" and noted efforts on immigration enforcement and the opioid epidemic. Democrats had promised to reopen the House Intelligence Committee's investigation into Trump, to investigate Trump's finances, and to obtain his tax returns. This is the first time in U-S history a president attacks a Cabinet member as frequently and harshly in public. I believe, just today, the president indicated that he might want the Democrats in Congress to be investigated, it sounded like for criminal purposes, by the Justice Department. It's also worth noting that Graham himself has been rumored to be a possible replacement for Sessions.

Good cause is a hard thing to show, especially since Mr Mueller's actions were approved by the deputy attorney general, said Jens Ohlin, a professor of criminal law at Cornell Law School.

Trump repeatedly lamented that he would have never selected Sessions if he had known the attorney general would recuse himself.

Sessions endured most of the name-calling in silence, though he did issue two public statements defending the department, including one in which he said he would serve "with integrity and honor" for as long as he was in the job.
