UCF Knights Hit Top 10 in College Football Playoff Rankings

Ohio State has a 29-point loss to Purdue in October on its résumé, and in the time since that setback, the Buckeyes have looked shaky.

The biggest movement in the College Football Playoff rankings happened outside the top four.

After a 36-3 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame at Yankee Stadium, Syracuse (8-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast) fell to No. 20 in the College Football Playoff rankings. An Ohio State win over No. 4 MI assuredly moves Ohio State near the top four and ahead of the Knights, who now occupy the highest spot a Group of Five team has ever had in the history of the rankings. But these games are also the most exciting and meaningful games of the season to the players, coaches and fan bases, as rivalry games bring out the greatest emotions, energy and effort.

Both teams have three wins against Power 5 opponents with winning records, including two CFP Top 25 teams.

LSU surprisingly still sits at No. 7 ahead of Washington State as the highest-ranked two-loss team, but the Cougars can pass the Tigers with an Apple Cup win this week over Washington, which is also slotted in the top-15.

"While UCF may not have the depth or talent of Ohio State, right now UCF has the better all-around team", Playoff chair Rob Mullens said on ESPN when asked of the reason for the move. Those two teams play Friday night in Morgantown. No other team in the AP poll era had even won three straight when allowing 40 points. "But again, looked at Oklahoma and that dynamic offense, and while their defense may still be struggling, their offense is carrying the day and still finding a way to win with their quarterback [Kyler Murray] being so dynamic". West Virginia dropped to No. 13 behind Florida and Penn State after losing to Oklahoma State.

CFP executive director Bill Hancock has often said there is no glass ceiling on the Group of Five teams.
