Trump hits out at General Motors over job cuts in US

Some 75 percent of its global sales will come from just five vehicle architectures by the early 2020s.

US-based carmaker General Motors announced plans on Monday to scale down production in the United States and Canada, with thousands of factory floor jobs to be axed.

The president said that the layoffs had nothing to do with tariffs and instead blamed Barra for making cars that don't sell.

"We estimate sedans operate at a significant loss, hence the need for classic restructuring", he wrote.

He said instead, the province will immediately bolster unemployment insurance and retraining measures to help the almost 3,000 workers who will lose their jobs. Also at risk are two transmission plants, one outside Detroit and another in Baltimore.

Chief executive Mary Barra said the company must keep pace with the trend for electric and self-driving cars and that GM was still hiring people in those fields. It also plans to cut production at two plants in the USA that make transmissions. "We supported GM years ago when they were in trouble".

"In contrast to times past, General Motors, under CEO Mary Barra, is trying to get ahead of a potential crisis by making cuts now", said Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at Autotrader.

GM plans to halt production next year at three assembly plants - Lordstown, Ohio, Hamtramck, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario.

"Most of the one-shift plants are sedan plants", Dziczek said. "It's hard. It's awful".

The four American plants employ a combined 3,800 hourly and salaried staff, and the Oshawa facility employs 2,900. The couple has an 11-month-old at home.

General Motors workers leave the Oshawa General Motors plant in Oshawa, Ontario, Nov. 26, 2018. Jobs will be hard to come by for laid-off workers. "I love Ohio", Trump said. For instance, in July 2017 during a rally in Youngstown, Ohio, near the the president said of manufacturing jobs that state lost over the years: "They're all coming back".

"I was very tough".

"They told me straight up there's nothing we can do", Ford said on Monday, after GM confirmed that the company will stop producing cars and trucks at the major plant east of Toronto. Barra is also shifting resources toward building electric cars and, eventually, vehicles that drive themselves. The General is due to begin contract negotiations with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union next year. "They better damn well open a new plant there very quickly. I think you'll see something else happen there".

"Everything is up in the air", she said. The auto produced there is also is built in Mexico. "I told them, 'you're playing around with the wrong person'". "It would be like breaking up a family". But the automaking leader of the future may not be GM or one of its traditional rivals.

GM - whose brands include Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC - said the cuts would save $6bn (£4.68bn) by the end of next year. The fall in new auto sales has troubled auto makers at a time when mainstays of the industry - private ownership and the internal combustion engine - are threatened by plans for shared vehicle schemes and electric cars.

Barra did not link Monday's cuts to tariff pressures, but said trade costs are among the "headwinds" GM faces as it deals with broader technology change and market shifts. At GM's Detroit headquarters on Monday, there were signs directing people to a "new hire orientation" meeting. The company plans to kill the Chevy Volt, Cruze and Impala models, as well as the Cadillac CT6 and Buick LaCrosse. The Impala is built at the GM plant in Oshawa.
