Lion Air Boeing 737 safety alert after crash

Boeing has sent a safety warning to operators of its new 737 Max jets in response to the investigation of last week's fatal crash off the coast of Indonesia that left 189 dead.

The airline confirmed that it hasn't experienced any of the sensor troubles and said its 26 Max remain operational and no schedule disruption is expected.

A requirement of the airworthiness directive is for operators of the two 737 models concerned to revise the aircraft's flight manual to provide the crew with horizontal stabiliser trim procedures to follow under certain conditions.

In a statement November 5, the Indonesian transportation-safety committee called on the U.S. National Transportation and Safety Board and Boeing "to take necessary steps to prevent similar incidents, especially on the Boeing 737 Max, which number 200 aircraft all over the world".

The sensor keeps track of the angle of the aircraft nose relative to oncoming air to prevent the plane from stalling and diving. Under some circumstances, such as when pilots are manually flying, the Max jets will automatically try to push down the nose if they detect that an aerodynamic stall is possible.

Investigators had found significant evidence that the crash of Lion Air flight J610 last week was likely caused by problems with this AOA display.

Carriers will have three days to update their manuals under the order, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Boeing 737-900 was on the runway at Fatmawati airport in Indonesia when its wing crashed into a metal post.

A Lion Air passenger jet underway involved in another accident, just a week after a plane from the Indonesian airline crashed with the loss of all 189 people on board.

The committee has said it is dealing with an "erroneous airspeed indication".

He also added that technical conversations between pilot and technician regarding the aircraft are written and signed in a document called the Aircraft Flight and Maintenance Log.

Reportedly, the last four flights of this plane had problems with the airspeed indicator.

"The question is why wasn't this plane pulled from service and the problem system removed", said Geoffrey Thomas.

"These are the things we are trying to find out: what was the damage and how it was fixed". A separate procedure involving a specific sequence of actions can be used to disengage the sensor from feeding information to the plane's computer system to address the issue for the duration of a flight.

The KNKT has disclosed that it insists on recovering the recorder, although rescuers are going to end their search mission soon.
