Donald Trump demands Mexico moves migrants from the U.S. border

Tijuana Municipal Police detained 39 people Sunday, according to local authorities.

The vast majority of those assembled at the border were economic migrants who would not qualify for asylum, he told CNN, adding that there were few women and children.

"The facts are, the policy written under President Obama allows us to use tear gas to disperse a crowd that was very unsafe", he told the network.

The Mexican government said later on Sunday it had retaken control of the border crossing after almost 500 migrants tried to cross the USA border "in a violent manner", and vowed to immediately deport Central Americans who attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Like other federal law enforcement officers, Border Patrol agents are allowed to use force if they think they are under attack.

"The way these people rushed the border was absolutely monstrous".

Mexico's Foreign Ministry has asked the United States to investigate incidents in the Tijuana-San Diego border zone on Sunday that led to US Border Patrol agents firing tear gas at migrants attempting to cross the border.

For weeks before the 6 November congressional elections, Mr Trump raised the alarm about the migrant caravans and ordered some 5,800 United States troops to the border to support border patrol agents. Many are from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

After the violence, Lurbin Sarmiento of Honduras walked back to the sports center with her four-year-old daughter.

The US Government has defended its response to use tear gas after left-wing critics in the country said it was an over-the-top response.

For instance, actress-turned-activist Alyssa Milano fired a familiar volley at Trump on Twitter: "You tear-gassed women and children, asswipe!"

Wind carried the gas beyond the migrants who charged the fence and took it toward people waiting some distance away, APTN reported.

"This morning, CBP was forced to close the San Ysidro Port of Entry to ensure public safety in response to a large number of migrants seeking to enter the US illegally".

On Friday, Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum declared a humanitarian crisis in his city, which is home to 1.6 million people.

The migrants have traveled through Mexico in large groups, or caravans. Most of the migrants in the group were men.

"The time is long overdue for Congress and this president to say we need comprehensive immigration reform", US Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent who caucuses with the Democrats, told CBS This Morning.

President Trump threatened to permanently close the USA border with Mexico on Monday, saying he'll take the drastic action if members of a swelling migrant caravan are not deported back to their Central American homelands.

He tweeted: "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that USA authorities will continue to have a "robust" presence along the Southwest border and that they will prosecute anyone who damages federal property or violates US sovereignty.

Scott also said agents only resorted to using tear gas to deter migrants after members began to pelt US officials with rocks. Democrats and even some lawmakers in Trump's own party have resisted his calls to fund his proposed border wall.

Trump has repeatedly suggested without evidence that the group of migrants is filled with criminals.

The incident lasted almost two hours, with two groups of migrants tear gassed after they crossed the Tijuana River, eventually returning to a stadium where they've camped for days, waiting for the opportunity to apply for asylum. During his presidential campaign, he promised he'd have Mexico pay for a wall.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said Sunday the country has sent 11,000 Central Americans back to their countries of origin since October 19, when the first caravan entered the country. "You can hang whatever angle you want to on it". If the United States doesn't want us, I'm going to stay here. Write to us in the Comments Section or on our Facebook page.
