Commons vote on May's Brexit deal will be challenging, admits Barclay

A no-deal Brexit would "cause huge disruption at the borders, it would mean tariffs and checks at the borders, and all sorts of unforeseen circumstances, and so that's something that a lot of lawmakers are very keen to avoid", Javed said.

As for what the deal entails, it does allow for an orderly Brexit, but in doing so just preserves the status quo for nearly two more years.

The Prime Minister made clear that the European Union would be acting in bad faith if it was unwilling to complete a trade deal and had "closed its mind" from the outset of the trade talks to the UK's clear position on fisheries ie that from the end of the transition period in December 2020 the United Kingdom will be an independent coastal state in complete control of its waters. The 10 lawmakers of the Democratic Unionist Party, the Northern Irish group that props up May's minority government, said at the weekend they will vote against the deal.

"I believe that nobody is winning".

In 2016, voters in the United Kingdom made a decision to leave the European Union, an economic and political partnership between 28 countries. So if a future Parliament chose to then move from an initially deep trade relationship to a looser one, the backstop could not return.

Thirteen British citizens residing in European Union countries asked the General Court in Luxembourg to annul the decision of European Union governments authorizing the opening of negotiations on Brexit.

"The British people want us to get on with a deal that honours the referendum and allows us to come together again as a country, whichever way we voted".

Boris Johnson, the former foreign secretary and lead campaigner for Brexit, said on Saturday that Britain was "on the verge of a historic blunder".

Britain would be entering unchartered waters - and quite possibly new elections - if the deal fails a second time arround.

May insists her deal delivers on the things that matter most to pro-Brexit voters - control of budgets, immigration policy and laws - while retaining close ties to the U.K.'s European neighbours.

Professor Anand Menon, director of the think-tank, said the economic modelling needed to be treated with "appropriate caution" but did "provide a clear indication of the broad scale of the impact of the deal negotiated by the Prime Minister".

"The worst case scenario for many, particularly for anyone who is a 'Remainer, ' is that we leave the European Union without a deal in place at all", Ayesha Javed, Deputy Editor of The Wall Street Journal's WSJ City, told Cheddar on Monday.

In her Commons statement, the Prime Minister will say: "Our duty as a Parliament over these coming weeks is to examine this deal in detail, to debate it respectfully, to listen to our constituents and decide what is in our national interest".

The deal would allow an extension of "up to one or two years" should the negotiations over "the future relationship" not be completed by the end of 2020.

May will now put the draft agreement to a vote on December 11, with many of her own party stablemates as well as those in opposition warning that they plan to vote against it.
