Canada imposes sanctions on 17 Saudis over killing of journalist Khashoggi

"The president of the United States has refused to halt arms sales to Saudi Arabia in part because he is more interested in appeasing USA defense contractors than holding the Saudis accountable for the murder of a Washington Post journalist or for the thousands of Yemeni civilians killed by those weapons", Warren said in a speech at American University.

"The murder of Mr Khashoggi is a crime of extreme gravity, which moreover goes against freedom of the press and the most fundamental rights", the French foreign ministry said in a statement at the time.

The measures, taken under Canada's Magnitsky Act, mirror sanctions announced by the United States one week ago, freezing any assets held in Canada and imposing a travel ban.

The sanctions announcement comes as world leaders, including the Saudi crown prince, gather in Buenos Aires for the G20 meeting.

When asked why the government is not taking tougher action by halting the Saudi arms deal, the minister says Canada is still working with its allies to get answers. Khashoggi died in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

According to reports, US intelligence officials have concluded that Mohammed bin Salman ordered Khashoggi's murder.

"They obviously made a giant strategic error in abducting and murdering Jamal Khashoggi".

In spite of today's sanctions, Canada is still wavering on whether it would cancel arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

"Saudi Arabia is a permanent member of the G-20 and, as such, he is attending".

USA intelligence officials have concluded that the Saudi crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, must have at least known of the plot, but Trump has equivocated over who was to blame.

"Investment opportunities in the field of infrastructure were discussed through (Saudi Arabia's) Public Investment Fund, as well as investment opportunities in the agricultural field in order to replace agricultural imports from other countries to the Kingdom", it said.

The government is still calling for a "transparent and rigorous" investigation into the death of the columnist.

"The response of Canada to the Khashoggi affair is one of those instances in which we see a consensus emerging between Canada and certain European Union countries in trying to preserve the rule-based global order", she said.

In the face of that, Congress is set to vote on a war powers resolution this week, which would withdraw US support for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, and is considering sanctions or other penalties for the kingdom.
