Amazon warehouse workers protest, say "We are not robots"

Amazon warehouse workers protest, say

Amazon's European warehouse workers are going on strike to protest Black Friday and the company's alleged mistreatment of its employees. The warehouse workers are protesting Amazon's infamously harsh working conditions. Facebook and Twitter is replete with images with Amazon workers holding placards that read "Jeff Bezos, you're the richest man".

But the majority of employees were continuing to work and there was no impact on customer orders.

The deals presented in various Black Friday sales can easily be blinding, saving incredible amounts of cash on tech, clothing and various other bits and bobs that would otherwise go overlooked.

GMB General Secretary Tim Roache took to the union's website to issue a statement, claiming that workers are "breaking bones, being knocked unconscious and being taken away in ambulances".

He added: "We're standing up and saying enough is enough". They allege that the world's biggest online retail company is treating them like "robots" and not humans. We are not robots, treat us with dignity and respect. The unions argue that 85 to 90 percent of the company's employees participate in the strike.

"Working people and the communities Amazon operates in deserve better than this". "Amazon is a fair and responsible employer. That's what we're campaigning for". The company tried to address the criticism in October by announcing all US warehouse workers would be paid at least $15 an hour, though the company also eliminated some employee stock awards and bonuses. Germans are expected to buy about 2.4 billion euros ($2.7 billion) worth of goods on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, an increase of about 15 percent over previous year.

"Your employees need better conditions and better recognition", Watson said.

"Amazon has invested over 27 billion euros and created over 75,000 permanent jobs across Europe since 2010".

More than 600 workers have gone on strike in Germany, where workers earn a starting salary of about $12 an hour, according to Reuters. It cited data from the UK's Health and Safety Executive stating it "has over 40% fewer injuries on average than other transportation and warehousing companies in the United Kingdom".

"We encourage everyone to compare our pay, benefits, and working conditions to others and come to see for yourself on one of the public tours we offer every day at our centers across the UK", the statement reads.
