28 drown in India bus crash, many of them children

In a tragic incident, at least 30 people were killed and several others sustained severe injuries after a private bus plunged into a canal of Cauvery River in Mandya district of Karnataka on Saturday, according to reports.

Among those killed were eight men, 13 women and nine children, they said. Police fear that the death toll could go up.

As the bus reached the edge of the canal, the driver and conductor managed to jump from the vehicle and fled from the spot. Girish reportedly helped a school boy, Rohit, escape from the submerged bus.

According to police, the driver has not coped with management, after which the bus in which salon there were 30-35 people, turned over and fell into the roadside canal. "I understand local authorities are making efforts to rescue and help affected passengers", said the President on his Twitter handle.

They said the children were returning home after half day school when the accident took place.

District officials along with locals were still recovering bodies from the canal. "I'm not sure what caused the accident, but it looks like it was the driver's fault".

Karnataka chief minister H.D.Kumaraswamy cancelled all engagements and left for the spot. "I will find out", Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara said.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi condoled the deaths.

Girish, a carpenter who was rescued, said he survived as he was lucky and knew swimming.

PM Modi expressed his sorrow and tweeted -"Deeply pained the bus accident in Karnataka's Mandya".
