Verlander cools off Red Sox 7-2 in Game 1 of ALCS

Carlos Correa snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the sixth before the Astros homered twice in a four-run ninth to beat the Red Sox, 7-2.

Josh Reddick hit a solo homer leading off the ninth, and Yuli Gurriel curled a three-run shot into the front row beyond the Pesky Pole to clinch it.

Devers then made two great plays at third base, including a do-or-die play to nail Jose Altuve on the run at first base.

The Astros lead the series 1-0 entering Sunday night's Game 2 at Fenway Park. He was solid in a pair of starts against Houston this season, allowing just seven hits and striking out 17 in 12-1/3 innings.

Sale threw with diminished velocity and poor command in his Game 1 start on Saturday, but allowed just two runs in four innings in the Sox' eventual 7-2 loss to the Houston Astros. Betts led the league in hitting, Martinez led with runs knocked in and finished second in both hitting to Betts and in home runs by five.

Cora disagreed with a strike call that resulted in Andrew Benintendi stranding the bases loaded in the fifth inning. Benintendi slammed down his helmet and bat down and jawed with plate umpire James Hoye before Red Sox coaches ran in to get between them. That brought Cora out of the dugout with the hook, and as Price handed over the ball and walked off the mound, the Fenway crowd mostly cheered in approval, numerous fans on their feet.

Boston scored two runs in the bottom of the first, but Houston stormed back to tie the game on a two-run double by George Springer.

But by that point, his fastball had dipped to 88-89 miles per hour, and with the top of the order looming for a third time and Sale already at 86 pitches, manager Alex Cora asked for no more, turning to righty Joe Kelly in the fifth. He walked the free-swinging Nuñez on five pitches, walked Jackie Bradley Jr.to load the bases, then went 0-2 on pinch-hitter Mitch Moreland before walking him on six pitches to force in a run.

Things got slightly better as the night went on.

As Price left the field on this night, the crowd rose to applaud the pitcher they booed off the mound in the Division Series, and he tapped the brim of his cap.

"It wasn't the line I dreamed of having tonight but our offence, our defence rallied together", said Price.

Cora said it's not an issue "because we know how we're going to work on it". We're not gonna give up.

For starters, the Astros had to lose a postseason game for the first time this fall, and lose a game at Fenway Park for just the fourth time in 11 games dating to the start of 2017.

Boston catcher Christian Vazquez hit second-base umpire Joe West on his right shoulder with a throw when Jake Marisnick stole second in the eighth.

Pedroia was 16 for 58 against Price in his career before the left-hander signed a free agent deal with the Red Sox prior to the 2016 season. "Haven't been successful the way that I know I can be and will be, but I look forward to getting out there tomorrow".

The Red Sox have not officially announced their starters for Games 3 and 4 of the ALCS.
