Verizon temporarily removes SIM locks from Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL

The telco has announced that both the Pixel smartphones - Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have arrived on the Airtel online store. If you buy a Verizon Pixel, it's really only going to work on Verizon at first.

But yes, it seems that Pixel 3s sold by Best Buy are SIM locked - its product pages even say so. This policy isn't limited to Pixel 3 phones; it applies to all Verizon phones.

According to a report by GizmoChina, the LG OLED display panel used inside the Pixel 3 is the same one Google used for the last year's Pixel 2 XL. Putting a Verizon SIM in it, the phone worked fine - but it complained again as soon as it had another U.S. SIM inserted, so this isn't just a "first-time setup" requirement. In past years, Verizon has sold SIM-unlocked Pixels that worked on every carrier - indeed, all its phones were unlocked because of a legal agreement it made a decade ago.

Speaking about the offer, Vani Venkatesh, Chief Marketing Officer, Bharti Airtel said, "We are excited to extend our partnership with Google to on-board their latest range of devices to our Online Store and delight customers". We hope the LG display will be on par with the Pixel 3 XL's excellent Samsung OLED.

The alternative is to buy a Pixel 3 phone directly from Google, in which case the device will be unlocked by default, and you'll be able to use it with any carrier of your choosing. Pricing follows the official Google Store pricing which means you'll need to splash the cash to the tune of £739/£839 for the 64GB/128GB variants of the Pixel 3 and £869/£969 for the 64GB/128GB versions of the Pixel 3 XL.

MobileSyrup has reached out to Google for more information about the issue and will update this story when we hear back.
