Trump Briefed by CIA Director Haspel on Khashoggi Probe

The spy chief on Thursday briefed President Donald Trump on Turkey's findings and her discussions, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in May 2010.

Trump has also insisted that killing will not interfere with USA arms sales to Saudi Arabia, citing a $110bn deal with Riyadh he announced a year ago.

Turkish officials and some USA lawmakers allege the crown prince ordered the operation in which Jamal Khashoggi killed.

It's unclear when the president will make a final determination on the Khashoggi case.

Pro-government Turkish newspaper Yeni Safak, citing the audio, has said his torturers cut off his fingers during an interrogation and later beheaded him.

Salah Jamal Khashoggi and his uncle Sahl bin Ahmed Khashoggi were received Tuesday by Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who expressed their condolences over the killing of the dissident journalist.

Mohammed has denied any prior knowledge of the of the mission and on Wednesday called the journalist's killing "a heinous crime". Instead, the photo opportunity elicited scorn on social media, with critics accusing them of exploiting the grieving son.

"Saudi Arabia is carrying out all of the legal procedures to investigate and present the guilty to trial", the crown prince told his audience. Officials noted that two of Mohammed's closest advisers were dismissed last week when the kingdom said Khashoggi died in a fistfight.

Turkish authorities maintain that Khashoggi was tortured, killed and dismembered in a premeditated operation organized by Saudi government officials. "We owe it to Jamal and his loved ones to uncover all of the truth".

But she added: "We should keep in mind there are hundreds, if not thousands, of people in Saudi Arabia who face travel bans and are held in detention without any justice". His remains have not yet been found.

However, Trump also said that he wanted to believe that rogue operatives were behind the Khashoggi killing.

"But we have enough right now to determine that the government of Saudi Arabia is responsible and is implicated".

French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May both spoke via telephone with King Salman, according to a statement issued by the Saudi Foreign Ministry late Thursday, hours after the European Parliament's resolution passed.

"What we know is sufficient to suggest very strongly that Mr Khashoggi was the victim of an extrajudicial execution", Agnes Callamard told Al Jazeera.

But Britain and France have both stopped short of suspending arms sales to the desert kingdom.

The people outside the consulate, some of whom had travelled from other countries for the vigil, lit candles in front of posters of Khashoggi.

After Khashoggi first disappeared, Saudi Arabian officials claimed Khashoggi had simply walked out of the consulate.

The United States has already taken some steps toward punishing the suspects detained or fired by Saudi Arabia, revoking their visas. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo participated in the meeting, the State Department said.

"We will continue to demand that all authorities across the Middle East immediately release all opinion leaders and political prisoners".
