Plug pulled on social network Google

In the aftermath of what appears to have been a major security flaw within Google+, the company ended up not disclosing the breach of information to its users.

In a blog post, the company revealed it discovered the leak and patched it in March.

That decision could run afoul of relatively new rules in California and Europe governing when a company must disclose a security incident.

As part of its response to the incident, the Alphabet Inc. unit announced a sweeping set of data privacy measures that include permanently shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+.

"None of these thresholds were met here", they said.

The bug: This had been around since 2015 and was found in code that lets third-party app developers access publicly available Google+ profile data about a user and their connections, so long as the user gives permission.

Google+ API's log data is only for kept two weeks, so it can not confirm which users were impacted by this bug.

Earlier, the company had been reluctant to share data on how often Google+ was used, but now, facing the fall out of exposed data, the firm appears keen to play down its importance.

This sounds like a fairly easy thing to fix, but Google apparently decided its little social media site that never quite made it wasn't worth the effort.

Google also said it would begin restricting the data it provides to outside developers. "Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+". In fact, 90%of Google+ user sessions only last less than five seconds.

Google said it would continue to offer private Google+-powered networks for businesses now using the software.

Smith said that when users grant permissions to access SMS, Contacts and Phone data to apps, they do so with specific use cases in mind, again indicating that the present policies have given developers overly broad access to people's information.

It also comes just weeks after a separate report in The Wall Street Journal detailed how the developers of some third-party apps are able to read users' email.
