Plane with 188 onboard crashes after Jakarta take-off

The jet, which had been recently grounded for repairs, vanished from radar just 13 minutes after taking off from the Indonesian capital, plunging into the ocean.

Mr Sirait declined to specify the nature of the issue but said none of its other aircraft of that model had the same problem.

They had grown up together, she told reporters, showing a picture of the smiling couple on their wedding day. 'I immediately started crying'.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said 198 people were on board.

In 2017, Indonesia's air traffic controllers association announced that the rate of take-off and landings in Jakarta permitted by state-run air navigation company AirNav was larger than the airport's capacity, thus increasing the likelihoood of accidents.

Indonesia is one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, but its safety record is patchy.

Lion Air is a low-priced carrier from Indonesia.

The Boeing 737-800 jet was scheduled to land at Depati Amir Airport in Pangkal Pinang, an island off Sumatra, at 7:10 a.m. local time. He and an Italian passenger were the only known foreigners on board. Lion Air in a statement said Suneja had 6,000 flight hours.

On Facebook there are photos of him in his Lion Air uniform, smiling.

Reuters reports that at least 23 government officials were aboard the plane.

In 2013 a Lion Air jet with a rookie pilot at the controls undershot the runway and crashed into the sea in Bali, splitting the plane in two.

It began gaining speed in the final moments and reached 397mph before data was lost when it was at 3,650ft.

The MAX 8 has a top capacity of 178 to 200 passengers, depending on the configuration of the first-class cabin, according to Boeing.

Lion Air's plane was nearly brand new.

An official of Indonesia's safety transport committee said he could not confirm the cause of the crash, which would have to wait until the recovery of the plane's black boxes.

Lion Air said there were two foreigners on the plane: one of the pilots, Indian national Bhavye Suneja, and an Italian citizen.

A search and rescue team at the crash site of Lion Air flight JT610 collect the remains of the plane and personal effects of the passengers.

Lion Air said today that Suneja had 6,000 flight hours, and that his Indonesian co-pilot Harvino had more than 5,000. Plane seats were also sighted among the debris.

He also shared a video he said had been taken from a tugboat off Karawang, just east of Jakarta, which appeared to show floating debris and an oil slick.
