More airlines opt for ultra-long-haul flights

Two pilots, a special "wellness" menu and more than seven weeks' worth of film and television entertainment were expected to accompany travellers on the 16,700-kilometre journey of the world's longest flight from Singapore to NY.

Spending almost 19 hours in the air is a helluva long time to be flying, but fortunately the passengers on the world's longest flight won't be cramped in cattle class. The brand new A350-900ULR which will operate the flight has been configured in a two-class layout with 67 business class seats and 94 premium economy seats.

Singapore Airlines has previously flown the route using the uneconomical, four-engine A340-500. The world's longest flight is taking travelers from Singapore to NY.

For the flight crew - which also includes two first officers and a 13-strong cabin contingent - the workload will be broken up, the airline said, with each pilot having a minimum eight hours' rest during the flight. 'I'm not sure what I'm going to do for 18 1/2 hours. "We do a review twice a year and revise fares based on the market supply and demand situation", said David Lim, General Manager, India, Singapore Airlines, without getting into specifics of what changes had been made in the fare.

Singapore Airlines, the city-state's national carrier, has relaunched the service for the first time in five years after the original flight was too expensive.

The Singapore Airlines has ranked first as the longest direct air link between cities, leaving Qatar Airways Flight 921 behind as it flew from Auckland to Doha, which took 17 hours 40 minutes.

Airbus said the A350-900URL plane's cabin has higher-than-normal ceilings, larger windows and lighting created to reduce jet lag - all part of an effort to lessen the stresses that can accompany nearly a day on a plane.

'My cousin said 'hey, this is in the press.' I'm going to take pictures and show her, ' she said.

Four airlines now connect Singapore to six United States cities.

The twin-engine plane uses a modified system that burns 25 per cent less fuel than other aircraft of a similar size, Airbus said.

Singapore Airlines have placed orders for an additional seven of the planes, opening up more possibilities for future flight services.

As with other Singapore Air long-haul routes, you can eat local favourites such as chicken rice and beef hor fun, or 'Book the Cook, ' a service that allows you to order dishes like lobster thermidor or rib-eye steak up to 24 hours before the flight.

"Ultra-long haul services comprise an important component of that strategy", an airline spokesman said.

The long-range Airbus A350-900ULR was installed to carry up to 161 passengers.

This was abandoned in 2013 due to high oil prices.
