Indonesia quake: RAAF plane to deliver aid

"The Philippines stands with Indonesia during this most hard time and is ready to provide assistance to Indonesia", he said.

The large majority of the deaths were in the city of Palu, home to 350,000 people.

Members of the French organization Pompiers de l'urgence leave after checking for signs of life on their device at a heavily damaged Mercure hotel caused by the massive quake and tsunami in Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia Friday, Oct. 5, 2018.

During a press conference, National Agency for Disaster Management spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said that the number of injured people rose to 2,549 and more than 70,000 were displaced.

Most of those displaced by the quake were among the 350,000 residents of Palu.

At least 1,400 people have been killed, with the death toll expected to rise as searchers have now changed their mission to that of extracting bodies instead of looking for survivors. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said security was being ramped up to ensure law and order after 92 people were arrested for looting goods such as motor oil, tires and farming equipment.

"The first six months will be traumatic, maybe in one year we have some progress". Released today by the Humanitarian Country Team, the Plan outlines the support that the worldwide humanitarian community is aiming to provide to 191,000 people over the next three months. "Indonesians have a big heart".

"Places that can no longer be inhabited like Balaroa must be relocated", he added.

"I'm still confused", he said, when asked where he will pray now.

Authorities warned survivors against theft in Palu, a city in Indonesia's central Sulawesi province that bore the brunt of the devastation and is still struggling to recover, Agence France-Presse reports.

Getting vital supplies to the affected areas has proved hugely challenging, with the number of flights able to land at Palu's small airport still limited, leaving aid workers facing gruelling overland journeys.

In the main route north out of the city, an AFP journalist saw youths blocking the road and asking for "donations" to clear the way.

The Indonesian government initially refused to accept worldwide help, insisting its own military could handle the response, but as the scale of the disaster became clear President Joko Widodo reluctantly agreed to allow in foreign aid groups and governments.

New Zealand will also provide an extra $3 million for aid agencies working on the ground and for back-up funding for relief and recovery efforts in the coming weeks.

In 2004, an natural disaster off Sumatra island triggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean that killed 226,000 people in 13 countries, including more than 120,000 in Indonesia.
