Google shuts down Google+ following massive security flaw

Google shuts down Google+ following massive security flaw

However, we ran a detailed analysis over the two weeks prior to patching the bug, and from that analysis, the Profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected.

In a blog post, Google said the information that was exposed includes full names, email addresses, occupation, gender and age. To make matters worse, Google decided not to share knowledge of the data breach when it was discovered in March. The company noted that information like Google+ posts, messages and G Suite content weren't included in the exposure.

Google announced on Monday that it is shutting down its Google+ (Google Plus) social network for consumers, apparently doing so as part of its response to serious allegations raised this morning by The Wall Street Journal. There are additional privacy moves in motion here, too, with Google's Project Strobe security audit also meaning most third-party developers will no longer be able to access Android SMS data, call logs, and (some) contact information.

The Wall Street Journal, reported that they have reviewed a memo prepared by Google's legal and policy staff, which indicated that disclosing the data breach could lead to scrutiny by government regulatory agencies.

Google said it found no evidence of data misuse.

"Had this breach occurred just a few months later, Google could be subject to strict GDPR fines for not keeping user data safe". Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly is expected to take the hot seat in another congressional hearing after the United States midterm elections in November.

Google says that like other tech companies, it has encouraged third-party developers to "build on top of our various services".

Now, after several years of speculation that it was going to be shut down, Google is bringing Google+ for consumers to an end.

Google plans to shutter its Google+ social network for consumers, citing its limited adoption with users.

Google claims there was no evidence of misuse of the data.

The company added that it made a decision to sunset the consumer version of Google+ due to the significant challenges in creating and maintaining it and its very low usage.

"Only apps directly enhancing email functionality - such as email clients, email backup services and productivity services (e.g., CRM and mail merge services) - will be authorised to access this data", Smith added. The company now says that 90% of user sessions today last less than 5 seconds.
