Global Warming Report Sends Urgent Wake-Up Call

"Projections suggest the burden of malaria could increase with climate change because of a greater geographic range of the anopheles vector, longer season, and increase in the number of people at risk, with larger burdens with greater amounts of warming, with regionally variable patterns", it said.

According to UN Environment's Emissions Gap Report 2017, even if countries fulfill their pledges to limit global warming to under two degrees Celsius, their actions would only represent a third of what is needed to avoid the worst impact of climate change.

By the end of the century, if warming stops at 1.5 degrees, the sea level rise may be almost four inches lower than if it stops at 2 degrees.

The report suggests that coral reefs would decline by 70-90 percent with global warming of 1.5°C, whereas virtually all ( 99 percent) would be lost with 2ºC.

The Paris pact aims to limit the global average temperature rise to "well below" 2℃ mark (above the pre-industrial level) while aiming to limit it at 1.5℃.

Even in the best-case scenario, where global warming is capped at 1.5 °C by the end of the century, its effects will most likely be devastating.

The signatories of the Paris Agreement would have to make sweeping changes to everything from industry and building, to land use, how cities run, and, of course, how we produce energy.

This means that any remaining emissions would need to be balanced by removing Carbon dioxide from the air. Some scientists who worked on the report say "there is no way to mitigate climate change" without getting rid of it.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said Australia would meet its emissions reduction targets, but he also wants to keep power prices low.

"The decisions we make today are critical in ensuring a safe and sustainable world for everyone, both now and in the future", said Debra Roberts, Co-Chair of IPCC Working Group II, in a press release. That could reduce flooding and give the people that inhabit the world's coasts, islands and river deltas time to adapt to climate change.

"EGU concurs with, and supports, the findings of the SR15 that action to curb the most unsafe consequences of human-induced climate change is urgent, of the utmost importance and the window of opportunity extremely limited".

The IPCC is a United Nations body assessing the science related to climate change, which has 195 member states.

Monday's report was produced by three IPCC working groups.

Labor frontbencher Penny Wong said climate wars inside the coalition government can not be allowed to hold Australia back any longer.

And temperatures are expected to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2030 if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise at their current rates, according to the report.

A landmark United Nations report paints a dire picture of the catastrophic consequences the world will face if immediate action is not taken to limit the global warming to 1.5°C, warning that at 2°C, the world could see 10 cm more global sea level rise, loss of all coral-reefs and worsening food shortages.

The IPCC report found that Australia was responsible for approximately 1 per cent of global emissions despite accounting for only 0.3 per cent of the global population.

Issued two months before the worldwide climate talks in Katowice, Poland, the report provides a timely input for the Commission's proposal for a strategy for long-term European Union greenhouse gas emissions reductions, to be presented in November, the EC said on October 8.

The Summary for Policymakers (SPM) presents the key findings of the Special Report, based on the assessment of the available scientific, technical and socio-economic literature relevant to global warming of 1.5 °C.
