Ferrari and Sebastian Vettel: A partnership destined to fail from beginning

Asked whether he might think twice in future when alongside Verstappen in future, Vettel bridled at the suggestion.

"If I did that, I would have to describe Ferrari's vehicle and then the rest of the teams will understand some more things about it".

Vettel, beaten by the two Mercedes in Russian Federation a week earlier, tried to put a positive spin on a disastrous Japan race.

Despite the error, Vettel insisted he would make the move again. "I don't want to dwell too much about it because it's bad karma too, so let's just go to Austin and get it done".

"I think enough has been said".

Verstappen had been handed his penalty for earlier forcing Vettel's team mate Kimi Raikkonen off the track.

A rampant Hamilton has scored 168 out of a possible 175 points since the British Grand Prix in July - a 75-point swing over a misfiring Vettel in the past seven races.

Hamilton was cock-a-hoop after leading a Mercedes one-two for his sixth win in seven races and fourth in a row.

Verstappen had already incurred a five-second penalty after nudging Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari off the track.

Hamilton, having benefitted from Mercedes" "masterstroke' in qualifying to secure pole on Saturday, made light work of the race at Suzuka on Sunday, claiming a fourth successive Grand Prix victory in comfortable fashion.

After Hamilton won the downhill gallop to the opening bend ahead of his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas, the ninth win of his impressive year was never in doubt. I don't really have an answer for that, it's not something I've really focused on, but I'm sure Sebastian could tell why.

The team itself hasn't helped out matters and when 2017 posed a genuine title challenge, they slipped up, with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton taking advantage and winning the Championship yet again. Although Ferrari have had the quicker auto since Silverstone, Mercedes looked to have surpassed them in the development battle over the last three rounds.

After starting from eighth following a horror show in qualifying, Vettel carved through the field and made a daring lunge inside Verstappen at turn 13 to take third but his Ferrari clipped the Red Bull and spun off in a shower of sparks. The incident resulted in a puncture for Magnussen, who later retired with a damaged vehicle. The incident was investigated by the stewards but they took no further action.

"Then the gap was there, as soon as he realised somebody is close or next to him, in my opinion, he push".

Lewis Hamilton hoped this year's title fight would go down to the final race of the season after relishing his head-to-head battle with Sebastian Vettel in 2018.

"But it's not always right that the other guy has to move".

Mexican Sergio Perez took best of the rest honors for Force India in seventh, while Romain Grosjean was eighth for Haas.
