Federer emotional after winning 99th career title

"It's been a magical week for me, a dream run for me", Federer said, prior to moving onto his traditional post-final pizza party with ballkids - of which he was one here two decades ago.

Romanian 28-year-old Copil served 26 aces in his victory over world number five Zverev as he reached the second ATP final of his career. Copil stands 2-0 over potential opponent Medvedev but has never played Federer.

Seventh-seeded Daniil Medvedev, who is also in Federer's half of the draw, beat Maximilian Marterer of Germany 6-3, 7-5.

But 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer roared back, first levelling the set before securing the crucial break of serve to move 5-4 ahead.

"This was nearly a turnaround week for me", the Swiss legend said.

He needed 44 minutes to claim the opening set but was brought back to level-pegging as Zverev won the second in a tiebreaker.

He will be the third seed in Paris and has a bye into round two, where he will face Croatia's world number six Marin Cilic.

"I made a promise to my fans to say a few words in French as well so here we are", he said in French.

"I was trying to win one or two matches here just to stay there but now, being in the final, it's an unbelievable achievement for me".

"But winning is fun, winning gives you confidence and that's what I'll need if I want to do well in London and beat the best over there, so I hope that this confidence I gained from here is going to help me there".

The world number three will aim for his fourth title of 2018.

There were five breaks of serve in the second set with three of those claimed by Simon as the Frenchman rallied to even out the scoreboard.

The top seed grabbed a second break, with the Swiss serving out victory a game later on his first match point.

This was Federer's 18th consecutive winning match at a tournament where he is unbeaten since 2013 and is an eight time victor.
