Daniel Ricciardo takes Mexico Grand Prix pole on all-Red Bull front row

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo snatched pole position from teammate Max Verstappen at the Mexican Grand Prix on Saturday, while Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton sits in ideal position in third to win his fifth career Formula One championship.

Hamilton settled for a spot on the second row of the grid behind Red Bull pair Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

World championship leader Hamilton, seeking to clinch his fifth drivers' title, was third for Mercedes ahead of his only rival Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari, with Valtteri Bottas fifth in the second Mercedes and Kimi Raikkonen sixth.

Having seen teammate Max Verstappen go quickest in all three qualifying sessions and then set the fastest time at the beginning of the Q3 fight for pole, Ricciardo leapt from fourth to first at the final attempt to deny the Dutchman the chance to become the youngest driver to ever achieve the feat. "I try to visualize how that could be like down the straight (opens arms out wide) and through the first corner - I just hope we come out of it with two cars intact".

It was a similar story in FP2, with Verstappen - the race victor in Mexico a year ago - going quickest with a time of one minute and 16.720 seconds ahead of Ricciardo.

"I've got to relax a little".

"The whole qualifying was c**p", said the 21-year-old.

After taking pole for the first time at a race other than Monaco, Ricciardo was ecstatic in the vehicle, leaving his engineers in stitches with his celebration, before making his push for quote of the season when being interviewed on the track.

Hamilton will start third, knowing he can let the Red Bull cars go off and running while he coasts his Mercedes to the finish line.

In recent weeks, Ricciardo has been beset with a raft of auto issues, with his early retirement from last weekend's U.S. Grand Prix leading Horner to question why Renault was continuing to allow his run of reliability issues given his imminent move from Red Bull in 2019.

"I'm really, really happy with it", said Hamilton. "You get a nice tow from the guys up ahead so naturally I'm going to be fighting to at least gain a position but of course I'm aware of the Bulls ahead".

If the Englishman finishes seventh or better in Mexico a fifth title will be his and although his...
