Bulgaria radio says suspect arrested over journalist slaying

Bulgarian officials said Wednesday authorities have arrested a suspect in the rape and murder of journalist Viktoria Marinova.

Interior Minister Mladen Marinov said that there was no evidence to link her murder with her work and no information of anyone threatening her, that the case is about "rape and murder".

The prosecutor general, Sotir Tsatsarov, said on Monday that while nothing was being ruled out, it was unlikely that Marinova's killing was connected to her work, reports the Times.

Officials say the body of 30-year-old Viktoria Marinova, whom authorities identified only by her initials, was found two days ago in a park.

The organization added in its statement that Marinova's last broadcast was an interview with Romanian journalist Attila Biro and a Bulgarian colleague, Dimitar Stoyanov, who were looking into allegations of fraud involving European Union funds, and that the two reporters were detained by Bulgarian police in September.

A police auto parks near a crime scene where TV journalist Viktoria Marinova was murdered in Ruse, Bulgaria October 7, 2018.

Daphne Caruana Galizia, Malta's best-known investigative reporter, was killed when a bomb blew up her vehicle in October past year and Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak was shot dead in February. Reportedly, Marinova was on a practice run when she was attacked and murdered.

Bulgarian police have said they are examining all possible motives for the killing, including the possibility that it was linked to her work.

The administration is yet to establish a link between her death in the northeastern city of Ruse and her work as a journalist.

Dujarric told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY "there's been a very worrying increase of violence, sexual and otherwise, that's particularly targeting women journalists".

Marinova's murder comes in a long line of attacks carried out recently against journalists.

An episode of her programme aired on September 30 featured interviews with two investigative journalists from Bulgaria and Romania who had been working on corruption allegations.

It was unclear why the pair was detained, but the incident took place just a day after Bivol and RISE published the first part of their investigation alleging massive corruption in EU-funded projects in Bulgaria.

They did not offer any new details about the case after their meeting with the local authorities.

The Committee to Protect Journalists said it was "shocked by the barbaric murder".

Mourning vigils to honor Marinova are to be held in the capital Sofia and other towns across the country later on Monday.

Reporters Without Borders, in their 2018 country report for India, have stressed the wave of Hindu nationalism promoted by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi poses deadly threat to press freedom in India.

"As security - rather than the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms - becomes the number one priority of governments worldwide, broadly-written security laws have been twisted to silence journalists", wrote Index on Censorship's Jodie Ginsburg past year.
