Arrest in bomb scare file

- Federal authorities arrested a man in Florida on Friday in connection with the mail-bomb scare that widened to 12 suspicious packages, the Justice Department said.

The FBI, which is leading the investigation into the packages, has only confirmed the existence of 11 packages and has not released any information about suspects or any potential motivation for the mailings.

The arrest came hours after two more suspicious packages were found on Friday - one addressed to Democratic Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and another to former national intelligence chief James Clapper, another frequent target of criticism from the far right.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press is reporting a suspicious package was found at a NY post office addressed to former National Director of Intelligence James Clapper.

It comes after law enforcement officials discovered crude pipe bombs in packages addressed to former President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and other prominent critics of Mr Trump in recent days.

The packages addressed to Biden were intercepted at DE mail facilities in New Castle and Wilmington, according to a law enforcement official who, like others, wasn't authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The targets of packages containing pipe bombs have been prominent critics of President Donald Trump.

On Thursday, a police bomb squad removed a similar-looking device, also treated as explosives, that was sent to double Oscar-winner De Niro at the TriBeCa Productions company he co-founded in NY. Officials are trying to determine if the sender or senders was trying to sow fear or actually cause physical destruction. Clean up your act. try to act Presidential.

The packages sent to public figures had numerous hallmarks of suspicious mail, including large block lettering and excessive postage aimed at making it harder to track, said Matthew Doherty, who formerly led the U.S. Secret Service's National Threat Assessment Center.

Some packages are thought to have been sent through first-class mail, another source familiar with the investigation said.

Authorities believe the packages, which were intercepted before reaching their recipients, all went through the US Postal Service at some point, a source said.

The package to Clapper was addressed to him at CNN's Midtown Manhattan address.

A 14th package was found on Friday at a post office outside San Francisco addressed to another wealthy contributor to the Democratic Party and liberal causes, Tom Steyer.

In a phone interview, Clapper told CNN, "It appears they got the correct spelling of my name.it's not a surprise".

An FBI statement said the other packages consisted of a manila envelope with a bubble-wrap interior containing "potentially destructive devices".

Packages have been intercepted in New York, Maryland, Florida, Delaware and Los Angeles.

In the meantime to find the culprits, the security of many media and celebrities has been enhanced, said the mayor, democrat of New York, Bill de Blasio.

"I thank God no one's been hurt, and I thank the fearless and resourceful security and law enforcement people for protecting us", De Niro told TheWrap. Authorities were also investigating a suspicious package in Sacramento, California, addressed to Democratic Sen.

The package targeting Booker was reportedly found at the Opa-locka mail facility in Florida, where sources tell CBS News some of the packages were processed.

The packages stoked nationwide tensions and fears as voters prepared to vote November 6 to determine partisan control of Congress - a campaign both major political parties have described in near-apocalyptic terms.

The chief of police in NY said he is "certain" that the perpetrators would be identified and arrested, but, as his colleague in the FBI, he refused to disclose any information that could be harmful to the investigation.

"Stop blaming others. Look in the mirror". She is a former chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.

The bombs seized Wednesday were about 15 centimetres long and packed with powder and broken glass, according to a law enforcement official who viewed X-ray images.

Like earlier targets, both Biden and De Niro have been sharply critical of Trump. It was addressed to CNN's NY office, just as one had been earlier in the week that former CIA Director John Brennan's name on it.

Three days after the first explosive device found in the home NY financier and donor to democrat George Soros, no one has yet been arrested.
