Almost 50 million Facebook accounts hacked due to existing vulnerability on platform

Ireland's Data Protection Commission said Facebook notified it of the breach within that time frame, though the report "lacked detail", the Journal added. "We do not yet know if any of the accounts were actually misused", Zuckerberg said. "These access tokens that were stolen show when a user is logged into Facebook and that may be enough to access a user's account on a third party site", he said.

In the biggest-ever security breach after Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook on Friday admitted hackers broke into almost 50 million users' accounts by stealing their "access tokens" or digital keys.

Facebook also taking the precautionary step of resetting access tokens for another 40 million accounts that have been subject to a "View As" look-up in the past year.

Facebook is the largest social media platform in the world.

It is also unknown whether networks of friends were also affected, as their data would have been visible to anyone with access to an individual's account.

These access keys also let the attackers theoretically access any other services that someone used Facebook's login service to log in to, whether that's dating app Tinder, or a niche smartphone game, and gain access to highly personal information. The hack was discovered by the company this week.

In 2016 CA is hired by Donald Trump's USA presidential campaign.

Ireland's Data Protection Commission has demanded more information from Facebook about the scope and nature of the breach to determine how many European Union residents were affected and the risk to users, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Cambridge Analytica, which denies the accusations, has since filed for voluntary bankruptcy in the United States and Britain.

Facebook, however, doesn't know who was behind the attacks or where they're based.

The commission said it was "concerned at the fact that this breach was discovered on Tuesday and affects many millions of user accounts but Facebook is unable to clarify the nature of the breach and the risk for users at this point". This time, Facebook can give no such reassurances.

"We will be making enquiries with Facebook and our overseas counterparts to establish the scale of the breach and if any United Kingdom citizens have been affected". Several Facebook users (including the author of this story) noticed the odd occurrence this morning and posted to social media wondering what happened. That political consulting firm told Facebook it had deleted the information, but it hadn't. "We haven't yet been able to determine if there was specific targeting" of particular accounts, Rosen said in a call with reporters.

"We've found and taken down foreign influence campaigns from Russian Federation and Iran attempting to interfere in the US, UK, Middle East, and elsewhere - as well as groups in Mexico and Brazil that have been active in their own country". Facebook India declined comment, directing queries to its global office. Contributions of 200 words or more will be considered for publication.
